The gyros are used to maintain the platform’s inertial orientation by sensing rotations of the platform caused by vehicle-rotation-induced friction at the gimbal pivot points ... One gyro - called the vertical gyro - is oriented so its input axes are aligned with the X and Y platform axes; its input axes provide IMU [Inertial Measurement Unit] platform roll and pitch stabilization. The second gyro is oriented so that one input axis lies along the platform’s Z axis and the other lies in the X-Y plane. This gyro - the azimuth gyro - provides platform yaw stabilization with the Z input axis, while the second input axis is used as a platform rate detector for built-in test equipment.

CONT

The sensors for angular velocity are vibrating gyroscopes(3 axes, to detect rotation and pitch/roll pendulations of the payload). An error signal is obtained differencing the signal from the azimuth gyroscope and a constant level settable from the telemetry, which controls the speed of rotation. Such error signal drives an analog PID [Proportional Integral Differential] circuit; the output of the PID is connected to the PWM [Pulse Width Modulation] driver supplying current to the pivot azimuth motors.

CONT

Constant-current modulation [is] a system of amplitude modulation in which the output circuits of the signal amplifier and carrier-wave generator or amplifier are directly and conductively coupled by a common inductor. The inductor has an ideally infinite impedance to the signal frequencies and therefore maintains the common plate-supply current of the two devices constant. The signal-frequency voltage thus appearing across the common inductor also modulates the plate supply to the carrier generator or amplifier, with corresponding modulation of the carrier output.

Subject field(s)
  • Optical Telecommunications
CONT

Fiber optics depend on pulses of light, transmitted through fine transparent fibers, rather than on pulses of electric current sent through conducting wires. The purpose is to transmit information rather than power. By proper modulation of the light signals, a very wide information bandwidth can be achieved, and because the fibers can be made thin, a large bundle can be accommodated in a single cable of comparatively small diameter. The signals are not vulnerable to eavesdropping, nor are they susceptible to jamming or to transmission of damaging currents due to an electromagnetic pulse from a nuclear explosion. Fiber optics are replacing electric wires for many applications, including computer links.
