The Zarya control module, also known by the technical term Functional Cargo Block and the Russian acronym FGB, was the first component launched for the International Space Station and provides the station's initial propulsion and power.... The U. S.-funded and Russian-built Zarya, which means Sunrise when translated to English, is a U. S. component of the station although it was built and launched by Russia.... The Zarya module is 41. 2 feet long and 13. 5 feet wide at its widest point. It has an operational lifetime of at least 15 years. Its solar arrays and six nickel-cadmium batteries can provide an average of 3 kilowatts of electrical power. Using the Russian Kurs system, the Zarya will perform an automated and remotely piloted rendezvous and docking with the Service Module in orbit. Its docking power will accommodate Russian Soyuz piloted spacecraft and unpiloted Progress resupply spacecraft. Each of the two solar arrays is 35 feet long and 11 feet wide. The module's 16 fuel tanks combined can hold more than 6 tons of propellant. The attitude control system for the module includes 24 large steering jets and 12 small steering jets. Two large engines are available for reboosting the spacecraft and making major orbital changes.

Westinghouse Lunar Color Camera. Used on Apollo's 12 & 14. The camera was mounted inside the Modularized Equipment Stowage Assembly(MESA) in Quad 4 of the Lunar Module(LM) Descent Stage. This gave the capability of broadcasting the first steps of the astronauts as they climbed down the ladder of the LM at the start of the first EVA [extra vehicular activity]. The astronauts would then detach the camera from it's mount in the MESA, mount the camera on a tripod, and carry it away from the LM to show the progress of the EVA. This system was the same TV camera used on previous missions inside the CSM, with a few minor modifications to adapt it to the lunar environment. It was called the Field Sequential Camera by Westinghouse.

The first segment to be launched into orbit, designated Z1, will not permanently attach to other truss segments. The Z1 segment is a 10 ft(3 m) cubelike truss made from six machined bulkheads that are bolted together. The truss houses four control moment gyroscopes that form part of the guidance, navigation, and control system. The location of Z1 is nearly in the middle of the station, which makes it an ideal location for the gyroscopes. A micrometeor shield composed of three sheets of 0. 25 in.(6 mm) aluminum about 5 in.(127 mm) apart protects the sensitive gyroscopes from debris. The 18, 300 lb(8, 300 kg) Z1 segment is currently scheduled to be launched by the end of this year. The truss is a transitional structure that will connect to the pressurized Unity module already on orbit. Astronauts will tighten 16 motorized bolts on the circular coupling on the Unity module side into nuts on Z1 and connect the associated utility plug-ins. Pressurized units generally have circular couplings and nonpressurized unit connectors are rectangular.

The Joint Airlock itself has two rooms, the "Equipment Lock" and the "Crewlock." The Equipment Lock is similar to a locker room, in that it is the primary area where the crew members don and doff their spacesuits ... ... The Progress supply vehicle to the ISS [International Space Station] is an automated version of the Soyuz, and was developed to carry propellant and cargo to the Salyut and Mir space station. It will serve the same purpose for the ISS. Although the ISS has its own propulsion system, generally it is the Progress vehicle that will perform periodic reboost maneuvers to maintain the ISS orbital altitude. The Progress is approximately the same size as the Soyuz, but it has a slightly higher mass at launch of approximately 7150 kg. The Progress spacecraft docks automatically to the ISS, and the TORU [Teleoperated Control System-Manual Docking System on Zarya] system acts as a backup remote control docking system. Progress is composed of three modules : the Cargo Module, the Refueling Module, and the Instrument/Propulsion Module. A modified version of the Progress M, called the Progress M1, is planned for operation with the ISS. This version will have more propellant tanks for refueling, as the entire Refueling Module is devoted to fuel. Water will be carried in the Cargo Module. The Progress payload includes cargo in the pressurized Cargo Module and propellant in the Refueling Module. Excess propellant that is usually in the propulsion system tanks in the Instrumentation/Propulsion Module can also be used by the ISS.

Displays and Control Module(DCM). This is an irregularly shaped box of switches, valves, and digital displays that gets mounted on the chest. It controls the primary life support system and the secondary oxygen pack.

Displays and Control Module(DCM)... Along the top are switches for power, communications mode selection, caution and warning. There is also a switch that controls the water that is fed to the Liquid Cooling-and-Ventilation Garment. A digital display is used to monitor the various suit circuits. At the top left of this module is an emergency relief valve. If the primary life support system were to ever malfunction, the astronaut would still have access to the secondary oxygen pack. To activate this secondary oxygen pack, all the astronaut would have to do is open a purge valve by squeezing a set of pinchers. This valve releases air pressure on the chest plate-this is the same valve that is used at the end of EVA [Extravehicular Activity] to depressurize the suit. Also on the left, a step down from the purge valve, is the mechanical-suit pressure gauge. Along the right-hand side of the module, are two switches : the ventilation-fan switch and the push-to-talk switch. The ventilation-fan switch can activate and deactivate a fan which circulates air through the helmet and other parts of the suit. The push-to-talk switch is similar to one you would find on a CB [Citizen Band] radio. If the astronaut wants to talk, he has to push the button to be heard, and if he wants to receive voice messages, he has to release the button. On the front of the panel are other controls for volume, temperature, and suit pressure.

Cargo Transfer Bags(CTBs) are Nomex bags that contain removable, reconfigurable divider. CTBs are capable of providing stowage for items on-orbit as well as in the following transportation vehicles : the Orbiter Middeck, Spacehab Module, MPLM [Multi-Purpose Logistics Module], HTV [H-II Transfer Vehicle], Progress, and Soyuz. The CTBs are available in half, single, double, and triple sizes. Each configuration has a zipper closure and a removable mesh netting restraint system located inside the CTB. The Global Transmission System(GTS) provides a capability for transmitting highly accurate time and data signals via the space Station external antenna to ground-based users. The data signals can be coded according to the specific user requirements and can include such information as the station orbital position.... The GTS uses a transmitter operating at two dedicated frequencies and mounted externally on the Russian Service Module. The GTS signals are available to ground receivers for periods of 5-12 min several times a day. Although GTS primarily provides a service to ground users, identical services are available to Russian-element users onboard the station.

An improved version of the Calibrated Synthetic Viewing(CSV) system developed at JPL [Jet Propulsion Laboratory] that used models of objects being manipulated and realtime video data to provide synthetic views of the manipulator workspace will be tested. This technology is intended to enable the conduct of manipulator operations in spite of obstructions that prevent a direct view of, for example, the interface between objects being mated. Upgraded software will be supplied by JPL and installed in the ARMSS [Automated Robotic Maintenance of Space Station] and the GCC [Ground Control Console]. An earlier version of this system was tested in FY96 [Fiscal Year]. As in the previous test, the test scenario will involve changing out a Remote Power Conditioning Module(RPCM), an ISS [International Space Station] orbital replacement unit(ORU). The surrounding structure will be "mocked up" to represent a typical ISS structure and ISS procedures will be used for the changeout.

The objective of the Microgravity Acceleration Measurement System(MAMS) is to measure and report vibratory and quasi-steady acceleration within the United States Laboratory Module on the International Space Station. Vibratory acceleration, produced by mechanical equipment and crew activity, has an oscillatory nature with a frequency greater than 1 Hz.
