DEF

A marine sedimentary facies characterized by a thick sequence of poorly fossiliferous, thinly bedded, graded deposits composed chiefly of marls and sandy and calcareous shales and muds, rhythmically interbedded with conglomerates, coarse sandstones, and graywackes.

CONT

... there are two major facies of sediments associated with geosynclines or mobile belts. These are the "flysch" and the "molasse" facies.... The flysch facies is marked by its great thickness and its predominantly argillaceous nature. It is almost wholly clastic, although at some stages bedded cherts or radiolarites were deposited.... The bedding is well marked, uniform, and rhythmic... The principal material is shale or silty shale regularly interbedded with graded beds of dark sandstone(usually graywackes) varying from a few centimeters to a meter or two in thickness.... Graded bedding is the rule; large-scale cross-bedding is absent, although ripple bedding may be present.... Noteworthy is the absence of carbonates, except as concretions in siltstone beds.

CONT

The flysch-like facies consists of greywacke-mudstone with locally abundant conglomerate and iron-formation ...

OBS

flysch: term used at Natural Resources Canada - Earth Sciences Sector.

DEF

DEF

An extensive, postorogenic sedimentary formation representing the totality of the molasse facies resulting from the wearing down of elevated mountain ranges during and immediately succeeding the main paroxysmal(diastrophic) phase of an orogeny...

OBS

A term originally used in Switzerland to describe the soft glauconitic sandstones, marls and conglomerates of Miocene age ... The term is now used to describe all detrital sediments of similar genesis laid down in foredeeps developed during the later stages of a major diastrophism.

  • Geological and Other Scientific Names
OBS

A same designation could refer to a geographic or a geologic entity, sometimes with a slight variant in spelling or writing. It is important to distinguish one from the other and write each correctly according to the given context.

OBS

Located in the Flin Flon-Snow Lake Region, Western Canada.

OBS

A coarse, west-derived molasse that lies east of the Athabasca Group.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Noms géologiques ou scientifiques
OBS

Subject field(s)
  • Tectonics
CONT

... the main orogenic phase occurred a few million years later with a sudden onset of flysch-type sedimentation. This is clear evidence of the uplift of the source area and/or deepening of the basin.

CONT

The main orogenic phase during which nappes and deep-seated granite bodies originated, first commenced during the Oligocene while the molasse sedimentation in the southern Himalayan foredeep and in the zone between the Karakoram and western Himalaya, as well as that between the southern part of the Tibetan Highland and the Himalaya, lasted from the Lower Miocene to the Lower Pleistocene. Only as late as during the Quaternary did the period of predominant uplifting begin in the Himalaya and the Karakoram.

CONT

As a counter effect Central and Southern Tunisia are lifted up and eroded, resulting in thick sandy formations. Mid and Late Miocene are paralic in the coastal area with a hot climate indicated by mangroves and evaporites, specially at the end of Messinian. Strong collisions continue from Tortonian to the late Pliocene giving large conglomeratic series. The last and main orogenic phasis is Early Pleistocene.

CONT
