MOLD CAVITY [48 records]

Record 1 2017-04-20

English

Subject field(s)
  • Plastics Manufacturing
  • Packaging in Plastic
DEF

A molding process in which two different materials are injected... into a mold cavity to produce products having surfaces of one plastic with desirable characteristics and a core of another material with its desired characteristics.

CONT

Sandwich injection molding refers to the production of a sandwich structure via injection molding. Different polymer melts are injected into the cavity through the same gate ... a characteristic sandwich structure with a skin and a core layer is formed.

OBS

co-injection moulding: Although this term is commonly used as a synonym for sandwich injection moulding, it can also be used in a more general sense to indicate the injection of two or more polymers.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Plasturgie
  • Emballages en matières plastiques
CONT

OBS

Pluriel : des sandwichs; des sandwiches.

Subject field(s)
  • Casting and Patternmaking (Metal Processing)
DEF

A casting technique whereby molten metal is thrust into a mold by centrifugal force.

CONT

The inertia forces of rotation distribute the molten metal into the mold cavities during the centrifugal casting, of which there are three categories : true centrifugal casting, semi-centrifugal casting, and centrifuging. The first two processes produce hollow cylindrical shapes and parts with rotational symmetry, respectively. In the third process the mold cavities are spun at a certain radius from the axis of rotation; the centrifugal force thus increases the pressure in the mold cavity.

OBS

The most common method is by means of a spring-driven arm supporting a crucible and mold flask.

Parts made from partially crystalline engineering polymers should preferably not be made by hot runner injection moulding if a perfect surface finish is essential. It is advisable to make use of a subsidiary runner, which thermally isolates the nozzle from the moulded part, thereby reducing the risk of surface defects.

OBS

Runners can be classified into two types, namely the cold runner and the hot runner. The mold temperature for the cold runner is similar to the mold temperature for the cavity. The material in the cold runner will eventually solidify, and be ejected with each cycle. The hot runner maintains the polymer at a melt temperature, either by insulation or by heating. This keeps the material fluid. Hot runners are not ejected with each cycle.

Venting. When the hot plastic is injected into the mold it displaces air. In a well-built, properly clamped mold without vents, the injection material may compress the air. The heat of compression might burn the material. The force of the compression might open the mold, causing flash. The resistance of the compressed air might prevent the mold from completely filling. These problems are alleviated by used of vents, which are usually ground on the parting line. Their size depends on the nature of the material and the size of the cavity.

The air-exchange system is a far simpler method. Here, after the parison has been expanded, plant air is allowed to circulate through the bottle and exhaust. Normally, a blow-molded part is cooled externally by the mold cavity, forcing heat to travel through the entire wall thickness. With the poor thermal conductivity of plastic resins, molding cycle times of heavy parts can be considerable. Internal cooling systems are designed to speed the mold cooling time, thus reducing costs by removing some of this heat from the inside. Several systems have been developed that incorporate three basic approaches : liquified gas, super-cold air with water vapor, and air exchange methods.

The preform mold consists of four major components : preform cavity, injection nozzle, neckring insert, and core rod assembly.

CONT

The core rod assembly ... has four functions or features: It forms the interior of the preform. It supports the parison or the bottle during transfer. It is the valve where air enters to expand the parison. The valve is located either in the shoulder area or in the tip, the location being governed by the bottle or core rod length-to-diameter ratio. Wide mouth bottles (that is, core rods with low length-to-diameter ratios) will usually have a shoulder valve. The core rod has a "blow by" groove. This annular groove, located near the seating shank ... is needed to seal the parison and prevent excessive air loss during bottle blowing and to eliminate elastic retraction of the parison during the transfer between cavities.

CONT

Even though the parison is exposed to the air, melt strength is not as crucial because of the support provided by the parison core rod.

Another process somewhat related to extrusion blow molding is the extrusion/molded neck process. Still used today by Owens-Illinois, this is a proprietary process that traces its roots to glass-blowing technology. It is unique in that the bottle neck finish is injection molded and the bottle body is extrusion blow-molded. In this process, the two halves of a neck finish cavity or neckring are mounted to an actuating head assembly, which intermeshes with the two halves of the blow-mold cavity. The process cycle begins with the main body mold cavity open and the neckring cavity closed. The actuating head assembly moves downward to contact the extrusion die head. When it is in position, extrusion pressure fills the neck section with plastic melt. After it is held for one to two seconds, the head assembly moves upward while, simultaneously, the parison is extruded. When the head assembly reaches the top of its stroke, the blow-mold cavity closes on the parison. The remaining steps of parison pinch-off, blowing, and part removal all follow conventional techniques. Although the production cycle is somewhat slow, the process offers the quality advantage of an accurately molded neck and the process advantage of a parison held at both ends.

In the common rising mold type of machine, the blow mold rises from below to close around the tube; the blow pin enters from the bottom.

OBS

The [continuous extrusion blow-molding] process has three subcategories : the rising mold method, the rotary method, and the shuttle method. In the rising mold method, the parison is continuously extruded directly above the mold cavity. When it is at the proper length, the mold rises quickly to capture the parison and returns downward to the blow station. After blowing the bottle, the mold opens, the part is removed, and the process repeats.
