CONT

If one were inside a closed mold and looking outside, the mating junction of the mold cavities would appear as a line. It also appears as a line on the molded piece and is called the parting line. A piece may have several parting lines.

OBS

Compare with "mould seam".

OBS

parting line : can mean the line representing the surface of contact between mold halves, or the line found on the object.

DEF

An edge gate where the opening from the runner into the mold is located below the parting line or mold surface...

CONT

A submarine gate penetrates through the steel of the cavity. When the mold opens, the part sticks to the cavity and shears the piece at the gate. A properly located KO [knockout] pin, using the flexibility of the plastic, ejects the runner and pulls out the gate. This type of gate is usually used in automatic molds.

OBS

[In] conventional edge gating, ... the opening is machined into the surface of the mold. [In] submarine gates, the item is broken from the runner system on ejection from the mold.

OBS

submarine gate; tunnel gate: terms standardized by ISO [International Organization for Standardization].

DEF

Usually a long gate extending from a runner that runs parallel to an edge of a molded part along the flash or parting line of the mold.

CONT

Edge gating is the most common. It can be of the large or the restricted type. If the edge gate is spread out, it is called a fan gate. If the gate is extended for a considerable length of the piece and connected by a thin section of plastic, it is called a flash gate.

CONT

Venting. When the hot plastic is injected into the mold it displaces air. In a well-built, properly clamped mold without vents, the injection material may compress the air. The heat of compression might burn the material. The force of the compression might open the mold, causing flash. The resistance of the compressed air might prevent the mold from completely filling. These problems are alleviated by used of vents, which are usually ground on the parting line. Their size depends on the nature of the material and the size of the cavity.

CONT

On bottles with handles, the flash is most often removed in a downstream trim press. In this press, the bottle is held in a contoured nest where a punch, also countered, knocks off the tail, handle, and top flash. The flash cut from the bottle by the mold pinch-off is held in place by a very thin membrane.

CONT

OBS

Flash on molded plastic parts is that small amount of excess material which flows out through the parting line where the mold halves meet. Tumbling equipment may be used to remove the flash on simple parts while pressure blasting may be used for a great variety of parts.
