MOLDBOARD PLOWING [6 records]

Record 1 2025-03-19

English

Subject field(s)
  • Plant and Crop Production
CONT

Clean-tillage involves inverting the soil so that most of the residue is buried. Moldboard plowing followed by preplant disking is a common clean-till procedure. Because crop residue is mostly buried, the soil surface is exposed to wind and rain, increasing the potential for erosion and a loss of soil moisture. Of the tillage systems discussed, clean-tillage carries the greatest wind and water erosion risks. Clean-tillage is not considered a conservation tillage system.

CONT

Clean cultivation is common in grape culture and signs of surface erosion are prevalent in all vineyard fields. The effects of erosion are somewhat less severe on the soil areas above the escarpment since the slopes are shorter and less abrupt than on the bench sites.

OBS

Now, Round-up is sprayed on the hay fields in the fall. In the spring, there is one pass of the "Res-Till" cultivator and the potatoes are then planted, followed by one cultivation and hilling pass. This saves several tillage passes : 1) the moldboard plowing; 2) 1 or 2 passes of the harrow; 3) 1 pass of the disc.

The ridge of soil resulting when a furrow slice is lapped over the first furrow slice when starting the plowing operations.

CONT

When a bottom(of a moldboard plow) turns the soil, throwing to one side a ribbon of soil that is called the furrow slice. When plowing is started in the middle of a strip of land, a furrow is plowed across the field; on the return trip, a furrow slice is lapped over the first slice. This leaves a slightly higher ridge than the second, third, and other slices. The ridge is called a back furrow.

CONT

Tillage systems need to be compared over an extended period of time to determine their transitional and long-term impacts on crop growth and soil properties. A 15-yr experiment established in 1976 compared reduced tillage systems with conventional fall moldboard plowing for production of continuous corn(Zea mays L.) on a Maryhill silt loam soil(Typic Hapludalf).
