With the official launch of Mondex, hundreds of phones in Guelph instantly became cash dispensers, and all 36 Royal Bank and CIBC automated banking machines in the city became available for dispensing Mondex electronic cash. Bell is converting 250 Millennium payphones in the city to become compatible with Mondex, and is deploying an initial supply of 2, 500 Mondex-compatible Vista 360 personal screen phones throughout the community.

What is Mondex? It's not another credit or debit card. It is an electronic cash card that gives you a convenient alternative to paper money and coins. The heart of the Mondex electronic cash system is a micro-computer chip embedded in a plastic card, which stores the equivalent of cash. Cash value is transferred onto your Mondex card from your bank account via automated banking machines or Mondex-compatible telephones and payphones.
