Wind in the general atmospheric circulation, typified by a seasonally persistent wind direction and by a pronounced change in direction from one season to another.

A monsoon circulation is similar to a sea/land breeze, except that it occurs over a much larger area. The most famous monsoon circulation occurs over India and southeast Asia. During the summer, the air over the continent becomes much warmer than the water surface, so the surface air moves from the water to the land. The humid air from the water converges with dry air from over the continent and produces precipitation over the region. Additional lifting from hills and mountains causes copious amounts of precipitation to occur, over 400 inches at some locations! During the winter the flow reverses and the dominant surface flow moves from the land to the water.

The name sounds romantic and oddly soothing: meltemi. But the reality is that this dry wind blowing from the north can sweep across Greek waters, swamping small craft, challenging ferries, and shutting down hydrofoils. It also can churn the waters, making them dangerous for swimmers, and blow sand at sunbathers on north-facing beaches.

Ce courant-jet a une vitesse moyenne inférieure à celle des autres courant-jets (12-15m.s-1) [...] mais il assure plus de la moitié du transport des masses inter-hémisphères entre les Mascareignes et la péninsule Indienne, soit 7.1010 kg.s-1 durant le mois de juillet [...] Après avoir atteint les côtes africaines et traversé la mer d'Arabie, il se scinde en deux branches, l'une divergeant vers le Sri Lanka, l'autre continuant jusqu'à atteindre l'Inde à la hauteur de Bombay. L'origine de ce jet est à chercher dans a divergence des hautes pressions du sud de l'océan Indien et la convergence vers les basses pressions de la mousson indienne, le relief de Madagascar guidant ce flux vers le nord [...] La figure 7 présente les différentes positions du jet de Somalie entre février et juillet. Ce jet est perceptible au nord de Madagascar presque toute l'année mais il n'atteint les côtes africaines qu'au mois de mai.
