The mixed-income, mixed tenure philosophy that informed the growth of co-ops, became the basis for the evolution of all forms of "social" housing development in Canada. Non-Profit Housing, funded in essentially the same way as co-ops, grew in even greater numbers than co-ops during these years. In grain markets, which normally are carrying charge markets, there are a number of occasions when the price structure may become inverted. One is the difference in the supply situation between a contract month that falls at the end of a crop year and one which follows the new harvest. Particularly in years when there is a small carryover, there may well be a higher price in the old crop delivery month because of the difference in the supply and demand balance between the two months. Short-term supply and demand imbalances can also cause prices to invert. A sudden surge in demand or a shortfall in supply may cause the near contract to move higher, while having little or no effect on the further contracts.
