The tobacco moth feeds on a variety of stored products including almost all grains, many ground cereal products, tobacco, chocolate, spices, etc. This species is often associated with the Indian-meal moth, causing similar damage. The larvae differ in that on the tobacco moth the body hairs arise from the centre of small blackish-brown spots. These spots are absent on Indian-meal moth larvae. 2, record 8, English, - tobacco%20moth

The larvae are dull creamy white and about 1. 2 centimetres in length when mature. The tobacco moth passes the winter as a larva, hibernating in a loose cocoon in cracks and crevices in buildings. Pupation occurs in late spring and the adults mate and lay eggs shortly after emergence. This insect, common in Great-Britain and Canada's West Coast, is an omnivorous scavenger of cereal screenings, dust, etc. Occasionally it is a major pest of bulk wheat, bagged flour and a variety of stored commodities. The adults vary in size with the male having a wing-spread of about 2 centimetres, while the female may at times exceed 2.5 centimetres. The forewings are dark brown with a number of blackish-brown spots. Approximately 300 eggs are laid by each female, most of them within a few days of mating. Three times as many eggs are laid on sacking as on grain. The mature larva is about 2 centimetres in length, shiny white in colour, with a yellow head. The feeding larva spins a light, closely-woven tube of silk as it eats its way through a food mass. When temperatures are too low, many of the larvae become dormant rather than pupate, extending the larval stage. High relative humidity is a requirement for satisfactory larval growth. At summer temperatures and a relative humidity of approximately 90% the life cycle takes about 100 days. 1, record 10, English, - brown%20house%20moth

1, record 10, French, - %26oelig%3Bcophore%20bronz%C3%A9e

The Indian-meal moth has a wing-spread of about 2 centimetres. The forewings are creamy white next to the body, and have a reddish-brown colour with a coppery lustre on the outer two-thirds. The female moth lays about 200 eggs, either singly or in groups, on food material. The larvae are dirty white in colour, often with a greenish or pinkish tint. The newly hatched larvae are almost never seen because of their small size and the fact that they burrow as far as two metres into the grain mass. They normally remain in the grain until they have completed their larval growth. When fully grown they are about 1. 2 centimetres long. In summer their life cycle is about six weeks. 1, record 11, English, - indian%2Dmeal%20moth

Rusty tussock moth.... Larvae attack all conifer seedling species.... These gregarious caterpillars completely denude a seedling before moving on to the next, and can occur in patches of 5-100 styroblocks.... The adult male is rusty-brown with a white dot and light brown band on each forewing. The female is flightless, sedentary, with light tan hairs covering the body. The population overwinters as white egg masses which can be cemented to the sides and bottoms of styroblocks. They will adhere to the blocks after seedlings have been lifted and blocks washed and stored. Because the eggs are white, they often go unnoticed. Larvae emerge from these egg masses(often on styroblocks) around May, and actively feed on newly emerged seedlings. They are hairy, up to 28 mm long, have two black hair "pencils" projecting forward and one to the rear, four golden brushes of hair on the back, accompanied by eight warty protuberances with yellow and black hairs on each segment. 4, record 53, English, - rusty%20tussock%20moth

Host : Chinch bugs attack a variety of forage, lawn, and wild grasses. The principal crop plants damaged are wheat, corn, sorghum, oats, etc. Symptoms : The chinch bug pierces the plant with its moth parts and sucks out the plant sap. This feeding prevents normal growth and results in dwarfing, lodging, and yield reduction. Severe infestations during early development may cause plants to wilt and die prematurely. Most injury is caused by the six nymphal instars. 3, record 69, English, - chinch%20bug

Due to the profusion of English terms possible, care must be exercised when choosing the correct English term for a given context. When reference is made to a butterfly or moth in its larval stage, then terms that include the words "worm" or "caterpillar" would be more appropriate than those that include the word "moth", which normally would imply that the insect is in its adult stage. However what complicates matters is that the female species of this family of moths does not always develop wings in adulthood. Indeed several female species retain their larval form even in adult life, hence the confusion in usage and the abundance of terms in general circulation. It is recommended however that the shortest term "bagworm" should only be used as a stylistic synonym, in cases where one would prefer not to repeat a longer term already mentioned earlier in a given text. 4, record 96, English, - bagworm%20moth
