Unlike soluble fibre, insoluble fibre does not dissolve in water. The main types of insoluble fibre include cellulose(primary material of plant cell walls), many hemicelluloses(cereal fibres), and lignins(non-polysaccharide). This is the best type of fibre for constipation, as it helps draw water into the stool to soften it and can help speed up transit time. It also increases fecal weight, which improves bowel movement consistency, and delays glucose absorption. 3, record 2, English, - insoluble%20fibre

Compound Slides(CS). A compound landslide is composed of a large host landslide... that encompasses smaller secondary landslides... The host landslide is a slow-moving landslide set on a gentle slope(<20°) of epiclastic materials. Its surface is irregular, with depressions, bulges, scarps and counterscarps and distensile, compressive and strike cracks. The movement of the host landslide can generate failures that favor secondary landslides located mostly along the steepest slopes of the host landslide(scarps and toe). Diverse types of secondary landslides may be observed on the same host landslide. Multiple levels of groundwater flow are commonly formed within compound landslides due to the presence of multiple low permeability surfaces(faults, cracks, material heterogeneities, and shear planes). An increase in the water table tends to accelerate host landslides and may contribute to secondary landslide failure. 1, record 3, English, - host%20landslide

Thermo-osmotic energy conversion(TOEC) is an emerging process that efficiently extracts energy from low-grade heat sources. By utilizing a temperature gradient, TOEC induces a partial vapor pressure difference across a hydrophobic membrane. This pressure gradient drives the vapor from the hot feed side through the membrane's pores to the cold permeate side. The movement of water from the hot feed side to the permeate side of the membrane results in excess fluid in the cold reservoir, generating a pressurized flow that can be harnessed to drive a turbine and generate electricity. 1, record 6, English, - thermo%2Dosmotic%20energy%20conversion

The oceans are mostly composed of warm salty water near the surface over cold, less salty water in the ocean depths. These two regions don’t mix except in certain special areas. The ocean currents, the movement of the ocean in the surface layer, are driven mostly by the wind. In certain areas near the polar oceans, the colder surface water also gets saltier due to evaporation or sea ice formation. In these regions, the surface water becomes dense enough to sink to the ocean depths. This pumping of surface water into the deep ocean forces the deep water to move horizontally until it can find an area on the world where it can rise back to the surface and close the current loop. This usually occurs in the equatorial ocean, mostly in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. This very large, slow current is called the thermohaline circulation because it is caused by temperature and salinity(haline) variations. 2, record 19, English, - deep%20water

Normal thermal stratification of a pond, if it is to occur, generally begins in May or early June and ends in September or early October. Ponds can stratify because water attains maximum density at 39°F. It becomes less dense (lighter in weight) both above and below 39°F. Soon after the ice melts in the early spring, the water temperature throughout the pond rises to 32°F. Winds blowing across the pond’s surface cause the water to pile up on the downwind side. The water moves downward, across the pond bottom, to the upwind side. The entire pond begins to circulate from top to bottom, maintaining a uniform temperature. As long as winds are strong enough, the pond temperature will remain uniform, even as the pond begins to warm during spring. This is a period known as "spring overturn." 5, record 38, English, - spring%20overturn
Record number: 38, Textual support number: 2 CONT
When surface water reaches 39 degrees in spring, it becomes heavier than the water immediately below it and therefore sinks. The downward movement of surface water forces water in the deeper parts of the lake upward. The resulting circulation of water is called spring turnover. Spring winds also help promote water circulation. 2, record 38, English, - spring%20overturn
Record number: 38, Textual support number: 1 OBS
turnover: A phenomenon usually occurring in spring and fall because of the increase in density of water above and below the temperature of minimum density. In the spring, as the surface of the water warms above the freezing point, the water increases in density, becomes heavier, and tends to sink, producing vertical currents, while in the fall, as the surface water becomes colder and therefore heavier, it also tends to sink. Capillary Rise of Ground Moisture: Moisture travels upward by capillary action --as much as 14 to 18 gallons per day have been noted under a 1,000 square-foot house-- and evaporates within the crawl space. Capillary rise occurs in nearly all areas where the soil is clay or silt. Capillary action is the effect of surface tension that causes water to rise up a narrow tube, against the effect of gravity. In building construction, capillary action can occur between two surfaces placed together, or within porous materials. This relates to the installation of wood flooring in that moisture can be drawn through both the subfloor and the concrete below it. 4, record 40, English, - capillary%20rise%20of%20soil%20moisture

The wedge-like intrusion of a large mass of salt water flowing in from the sea under the freshwater in a tidal waterway. [Definition standardized by ISO.] 5, record 55, English, - salt%2Dwater%20wedge
Record number: 55, Textual support number: 1 CONT
One of the most notable characteristics of an estuary is the differing gradients of salinity that are present... These gradients may appear both horizontally and vertically within the water column. Under flood tide conditions the layer of surface water coming into the estuary is moving at a faster rate than the bottom layer. As the tidal waters come in contact with the fresh water moving out of the river, the more dense salt water sinks to the bottom causing the fresh water to rise. The result of this tidal movement is a mixing of the fresh and salt water from the top to the bottom referred to as tidal over-mixing, and a salt water "wedge" being formed. The wedge is narrowest at the head of the river and it broadens out towards the mouth of the river. 6, record 55, English, - salt%2Dwater%20wedge

An osteochondral bar is a degenerative overgrowth of tissue. When the spine has abnormal pressure of movement of a vertebral segment, the disc, joint, and vertebra will start to degenerate. The disc can either lose height and water content virtually drying up, or bulge outward from its normal position. The joint/vertebra will start to lay down more bone which results in spurs and overgrowth that can create these "bars" of tissue that are comprised of cartilage(chondral) and bone(osteo). 1, record 61, English, - osteochondral%20bar

Most energy sources on Earth are forms of indirect solar energy, although we usually don’t think of them in that way. Coal, oil and natural gas derive from ancient biological material which took its energy from the sun(via plant photosynthesis) millions of years ago. All the energy in wood and foodstuffs also comes from the sun. Movement of the wind(which causes waves at sea), and the evaporation of water to form rainfall which accumulates in rivers and lakes, are also powered by the sun. Therefore, hydroelectric power and wind and wave power are forms of indirect solar energy. Direct solar energy is what we usually mean when we speak of solar power-it is the use of sunlight for heating or generating electricity. 2, record 63, English, - solar%20energy

Movement of liquid across an electrophoretic support medium due to the migration of hydrated ions of the charge opposite that of the charged functional group in the support medium (e.g. -Ch2COO- in cellulose acetate). 1, record 67, English, - electroosmosis
Record number: 67, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Electro-osmosis is the transport of water from one electrode to another. It results from the support medium being charged. At neutral and alkaline pH the charge is usually negative, the charged medium therefore attempts to move towards the anode. To balance this, positively charged water molecules(H3O+) move to the cathode. This movement of water does not affect the fractionating capacity but can cause loss of water from reservoirs, thus altering the homogeneity of the electrophoretic field. 4, record 67, English, - electroosmosis

Record number: 69, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The process of debris movement in periglacial regions has been variously defined and a number of terms have been suggested. First J. G. Anderson(1906) proposed the term "solifluction"(solum-soil, fluere-flow) for slow movement of debris, soaked with water, from higher to lower slopes. Solifluction term was replaced by "congelifluction" of J. Daylik(1951) to incorporate only soilflow in the periglacial climate having permafrost lying below an active layer. K. Bryan(1946) used the term "cryoturbation" which included all types of mass-movement of regolith under periglacial environment. Recently, "gelifluction" is used in place of "congelifluction. " 5, record 69, English, - gelifluction

2, record 82, French, - %C3%A9chelle%20de%20temp%C3%A9rature

Some water level recorders utilize a float on the surface of the water which is attached to a moveable gear in the recorder. A rise or fall of the water surface causes the float to rise or fall. This rotates the gear and the movement is recorded. Other water level gauges monitor either relative or absolute pressure at a point under the water surface. This pressure measurement can then be converted to height of the water surface. Still other water level recorders monitor the travel time of sound waves generated and received at a point above the water surface. This travel time can then be converted to the height of the water surface. 3, record 84, English, - water%2Dstage%20recorder

The bioplugs are strategically inserted into the contaminated zone(s). Liquids then flow through the plugs by a pressure gradient created using compressed air. Unfortunately, the on/off status often is not an accurate indicator of whether groundwater is reaching the plant root zone, but the rise of water above the water table due to capillarity is detected easily by the monitoring. It reaches over 560 kilometers(348 miles) from the surface of the Earth, so we are only able to see what occurs fairly close to the ground.... Life on Earth is supported by the atmosphere, solar energy, and our planet's magnetic fields. The atmosphere absorbs the energy from the Sun, recycles water and other chemicals, and works with the electrical and magnetic forces to provide a moderate climate. The atmosphere also protects us from high-energy radiation and the frigid vacuum of space. The envelope of gas surrounding the Earth changes from the ground up. Four distinct layers have been identified using thermal characteristics(temperature changes), chemical composition, movement, and density [:] the troposphere..., the stratosphere..., the mesophere..., the thermosphere. The exosphere starts at the top to the thermosphere and continues until it merges with interplanetary gases, or space. In this region of the atmosphere, Hydrogen and Helium are the prime components and are only present at extremely low densities. 3, record 100, English, - Earth%27s%20atmosphere

2, record 100, French, - atmosph%C3%A8re%20terrestre
