In early april 1935, 1500 residents of federal UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF CAMPS in BC went on strike and moved by train and truck to Vancouver. When local governments refused responsibility for the strikers’ welfare, and when the men themselves began to grow restless at the apparent failure of their movement, Arthur Evans(Workers’ Unity League) and his associates decided to take the strike to Ottawa. On June 3, over 1, 000 strikers began the "On to Ottawa Trek", determined to inform the nation of their cause and to lay complaints before Parliament and Prime Minister R. B. Bennett.

Lockout and tagging ensures that hazardous energy sources are under the control of each worker. Serious or fatal accidents can occur when people assume that machinery is turned off or made harmless but it isn’t. Lockout is a procedure that prevents the release of hazardous energy. It often involves workers using a padlock to keep a switch in the "off" position, or to isolate the energy of moving parts. This prevents electric shock, sudden movement of components, chemical combustion, falling counterweights, and other actions that can endanger lives. Lockout is a physical way to ensure that the energy source is de-energized, deactivated, or otherwise inoperable.

Ces ouvriers préviennent ainsi le risque de choc électrique, de déplacement subit de pièces, de combustion chimique, de chute de contrepoids et d'autres situations qui peuvent mettre la vie en danger. Le cadenassage est une intervention mécanique permettant de neutraliser une source d'énergie en la désactivant, en la mettant hors tension ou par tout autre moyen.

The term May Day can refer to any of several traditional secular, Christian, or pagan holidays celebrated either on 1 May itself or another day at the beginning of May and having as a common element the commemoration of the height of spring or the coming of summer. May Day is now more commonly celebrated as a commemoration of the Haymarket Riot of 1886 in Chicago, Illinois, United States which occurred on May 4th but was the culmination of labor unrest which began on May 1. The date consequently became established as an anarchist and socialist holiday during the 20th century, and in these circles it is often known as International Workers’ Day or Labour Day. In this form, May Day has become an International celebration of the social and economic achievements of the working class and labor movement.

Workers Mourning Day is always observed on April 28. Workers Mourning Day is the official Day of Mourning recognized by Parliament in 1991 in memory of workers killed or injured in the workplace. Each year on this day, the Canadian Labour Congress holds a Memorial Ceremony in Ottawa in observance of the workers killed or hurt at work. Although not a legal holiday, April 28 is recognized by the labour movement across Canada as the day to mourn victims of workplace accidents and or the renewal of the pledge to making the workplace safer.
