Subject field(s)
  • Driving (Road Vehicles)
  • Road Traffic

CONT

Marginal friction is that friction which exists along the margin of the route, whereas intersectional friction occurs between vehicles moving approximately at right angles.... Marginal friction is influenced by a number of factors, such as type of abutting property, amount and type of parking, and type of physical edge features.

Record 3 2010-03-26

English

Subject field(s)
  • Aeronautical Engineering and Maintenance
CONT

When the aircraft gets on the ground an external check has to be made to ensure the plane is sound and capable of flight. A bonding check most definitely will be done to ensure that none of the bonding strips were burnt through. Bonding strips are just strands of braided conductive material that allows the charges that are carried by the aircraft(due mainly to friction with the moving airstream) to equalize throughout the aircraft. In any event what should happen is that the current from the lightening should pass throught the structure, through the bonding strips and be discharged into the atmosphere through the static wicks that are on the trailing edge of the wing tips and rudder.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Aeronautical Engineering and Maintenance
  • Special-Language Phraseology
OBS

Differential adjustment : An aircraft has its wing defined as a wing-like body with a tangential flow rotor in the leading edge. A shroud, under the lower part of the tangential flow rotor, terminates in at least one movable flap defining a lift-generating lip when the rotor is rotating such that the upper part of the rotor, projecting above the level of the upper surface of the wing-like body, is moving rearwardly. Differential adjustment of the flaps in the wings to either side of an aircraft centerline allows directional control and control of banking of the aircraft.

PHR

Differentially adjust the camber of the wing, the intensity of drop-lights, the lift-producing device, the pitch of the wing.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Optics
DEF

A test that uses interference patterns produced by a knife edge to determine the deviation of a mirror from its ideal shape.

CONT

The Foucault test is performed by moving a knife edge laterally into the image of a small point source. The eye, or a camera, is placed immediately behind the knife edge, and the exit pupil of the system is observed.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Optique
CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric Physics
  • Geophysics
CONT

As stated before, the atmospheric conditions which are most favorable for the Green Flash are a calm and stratified atmosphere. When the Sun is a few degrees above the horizon, it appears distorted and flattened in the vertical direction(although the azimuthal size hardly changes). The closer it gets to the horizon, the more flattened it gets. Soon, the edge of the sun will become "notched" on either side. These notches appear to "ride" up the sides of the Sun from bottom to top; however, in reality, the notches are caused by the atmospheric layering and aren’t moving-it's the sun which is setting through them.
