The paraglider wing(or "canopy") is a self-inflating structure consisting of a row of cells, most of them open at the front and all of them closed at the back, joined together side by side. Moving through the air keeps them inflated because air goes in the front but can’t get out the back. 8, record 5, English, - paragliding%20canopy

Although the term "paraglider" generally refers to the entire aircraft assembly, paraglider pilots often used the term "paraglider" in specific contexts as a synonym of "wing" and "canopy," in which case it refers to the self-inflating structure made of non-porous fabric and not to the entire assembly. 9, record 5, English, - paragliding%20canopy

Paragliders have no rigid structure and are kept in shape by the internal pressure of air, with the pilot suspended by lines beneath. The pilot is clipped into a harness and oriented in a sitting position for maximum comfort. After laying out the wing and lines, launching is simply a matter of moving down the slope a few steps to tension the lines and allow the wind to inflate the wing and raise it above you. A short run forward to pick up airspeed and you’re airborne! 4, record 9, English, - launching
Record number: 9, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Paraglider pilots launch from gentle hillsides with their gliders already opened for flight; if the glider isn’t flying properly, the launch can be aborted before leaving the ground. Paragliding launches are not as "committing"; if you want to stop your launch, you just stop running and the canopy floats down behind you. The pilot runs down a gentle slope and glides away from the mountain. 2, record 9, English, - launching

To enable an image to be formed from this, the specimen must be scanned. The image of the spot is directed through a pinhole stop in an intermediate image plane. As a result, only light from the focal plane can reach the detector(a photomultiplier). All other(out-of-focus) planes are blocked out. This results in an "optical section". The images are stored electronically and displayed on a monitor. A series of optical sections can be recorded by moving a motor a slight distance along the z-axis each time an image has been recorded, after which the next image is then also recorded. Such a z-series permits the electronic reconstruction of the three-dimensional structure using suitable computer programs. The procedure, which is restricted to incident-light techniques, has completely revolutionized fluorescence microscopy in biology in particular. 2, record 14, English, - confocal%20microscopy

One of the most notable characteristics of an estuary is the differing gradients of salinity that are present... These gradients may appear both horizontally and vertically within the water column. Under flood tide conditions the layer of surface water coming into the estuary is moving at a faster rate than the bottom layer. As the tidal waters come in contact with the fresh water moving out of the river, the more dense salt water sinks to the bottom causing the fresh water to rise. The result of this tidal movement is a mixing of the fresh and salt water from the top to the bottom referred to as tidal over-mixing, and a salt water "wedge" being formed. The wedge is narrowest at the head of the river and it broadens out towards the mouth of the river. 6, record 22, English, - salt%2Dwater%20wedge

Leaks... fall into two basic types : internal leakage [such] as a thin oil film is built into the working parts of a hydraulic system. This lubricates the mating surfaces of valve spools, cylinder pistons, and other moving parts. Oil is not lost through this normal internal leakage since it eventually returns to the system reservoir. However, too much internal leakage will slow the operation of the system and waste power through the generation of heat. In some cases, it may cause cylinders to creep or drift. Or it may cause loss of oil control in the valves.... External oil leaks not only look bad-they can be expensive and hazardous.... A small leak can also be the signal for a hydraulic rupture that may injure a person while putting the machine out of operation.... Every joint in a hydraulic circuit is a potential point of leakage. This is why the number of connections in a system is kept at a minimum. Components can leak, but care in assembly and use of new seals and gaskets during overhaul will help to reduce this problem. 2, record 29, English, - leak

2, record 29, French, - fuite

Companion Rescue refers to the actions taken by fellow group members if an individual is buried. Experience and statistics show that fully buried avalanche victims who are still alive when the avalanche stops moving must be found out quickly(within 15 minutes) to have reasonable chances of survival... In light of this, the efforts of the people who survive and/or witness an accident are crucial to the survival of victims. stall regulation. The blades on a stall-regulated-WT [wind turbine] cannot be pitched. To achieve control of power captured above rated wind speed, the blades are carefully designed so that they progressively stall starting at the blade root and moving out towards the tip as the wind speed increases further. Stall-regulated WTs will respond much more quickly to gusts than pitch-regulated WTs(where mecanic pitch adjustments take finite amounts of time to effect), improving the power quality output by the WT above rated wind speed. 1, record 36, English, - stall%2Dregulated%20blade

Ballistic stretching uses the momentum of a moving body or a limb in an attempt to force it beyond its normal range of motion. This is stretching, or "warming up", by bouncing into(or out of) a stretched position, using the stretched muscles as a spring which pulls you out of the stretched position.... Do not confuse dynamic stretching with ballistic stretching! Dynamic stretching consists of controlled leg and arm swings that take you(gently!) to the limits of your range of motion. Ballistic stretches involve trying to force a part of the body beyond its range of motion. In dynamic stretches, there are no bounces or "jerky" movements. 2, record 37, English, - ballistic%20stretching

Magnetoplasmadynamic(MPD) thrusters pass a large current radially outwards through a neutral plasma, from a central cathode to an annular anode. The radial current induces an azimuthal, circular magnetic field. The Lorentz body force acting on ions moving in the discharge current accelerates the plasma along the axis of the electrode structure. MPD thrusters operate at high power levels, kilowatts to megawatts, and provide high thrust with moderate specific impulse. A variant of this design uses an externally applied magnetic field to enable operation at lower power levels. MPD thrusters have been tested in the laboratory and have flown on test and demonstration missions. MPD thrusters are an insufficiently mature technology and consume too much power to be considered as candidates to provide primary propulsion of future out of Earth orbit missions and were not considered for SMART-1. 3, record 47, English, - magnetoplasmadynamic%20thruster

The pulsed plasma thruster(PPT) with solid propellant is used for low power propulsion systems; typically with an average power less than thirty watts. Capacitor stored electrical energy is used to create a pulsed arc discharge across the face of a block of propellant, teflon in most implementations to date. The combination of thermal flux, particle bombardment and surface reactions ablates and ionises a small amount of the solid material... The peak discharge current is high, in the region of tens of kA. The self-induced magnetic field acts on the ions moving in the electric field creating the discharge to create a Lorentz body force that accelerates the plasma. Teflon PPTs have enjoyed limited use in east-west station keeping and sun pointing applications. PPTs do not produce sufficient thrust to be considered as candidates to provide primary propulsion of future out of Earth orbit missions and were not considered for SMART-1. 2, record 48, English, - pulsed%20plasma%20thruster

The Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales, CNES(French Space Agency) took a spectacular picture of the European ERS-1 satellite via SPOT 4, the most recent optical observation satellite in the SPOT family, which was launched on 24 March 1998.... From its orbit at an altitude of 820 km, SPOT 4 is able to pick out details of 10 metres on the Earth's surface, which is moving at a speed of 24, 000 km per hour. The ERS-1 orbit is 41 km below that of SPOT, which means that the latter can distinguish details of 50 cm in size on ERS-1. The unschooled way a human propels himself through the water. Children's paddling is often more chaotic, with the arms alternately clawing at the water to move forward; breathing is irregular, legs thrashing and inconsistent. Whether washing is used or not, the wheat must be brought to a specific moisture content to prepare it for milling. This is achieved by several cycles of wetting and resting. In milling technology this is called tempering. The wetting is carried out in a damping conveyor where a controlled amount of water is sprayed on the moving wheat as it is conveyed slowly to the tempering bin where the wheat is allowed to rest for a predetermined period. Following the first tempering, the wheat may go through a second tempering cycle. A two stage tempering system is preferred over a single stage, since there are occasions when the moisture content of the grain must be increased by as much as 6. 0%. It is much easier to make this addition in two stages, separated by a rest period, to allow for proper distribution of moisture in the wheat kernel. Tempering the wheat to a proper moisture content is an essential part of the milling process. Optimal tempering toughens the bran and thereby facilitates its separation from the endosperm without extensive powdering. It also mellows the endosperm and this facilitates its reduction without excessive starch damage. 1, record 59, English, - wetting

1, record 59, French, - humidification

Whether washing is used or not, the wheat must be brought to a specific moisture content to prepare it for milling. This is achieved by several cycles of wetting and resting. In milling technology this is called tempering. The wetting is carried out in a damping conveyor where a controlled amount of water is sprayed on the moving wheat as it is conveyed slowly to the tempering bin where the wheat is allowed to rest for a predetermined period. Following the first tempering, the wheat may go through a second tempering cycle. Once the new annex is up and operational, the two new phases will be split to handle processing on one side and shipping on the other. A new detached office will be built to handle customer relations, and the scale driveway will extended from its current 100 feet to 140. The driveway extension will take place first, said Borgen, which will necessitate the B-train trucks to use trackside loading while that takes place. There will also be an increased head drive on the existing leg, and an additional shipping leg will be added in Phase II. An eventual goals as well is to locate the Pool' s farm service centre at the elevator, moving it out of the city, said Sanders. 2, record 63, English, - shipping%20leg

Graded-index multimode fiber contains a core in which the refractive index diminishes gradually from the center axis out toward the cladding. The higher refractive index at the center makes the light rays moving down the axis advance more slowly than those near the cladding. Also, rather than zig-zagging off the cladding, light in the core curves helically because of the graded index, reducing its travel distance. The shortened path and the higher speed allow light at the periphery to arrive at a receiver at about the same time as the slow but straight rays in the core axis. The result : a digital pulse suffers less dispersion. These fibers often become the physical medium for local-area networks. 2, record 72, English, - graded%2Dindex%20multimode%20fiber

2, record 72, French, - fibre%20multimode%20%C3%A0%20gradient%20d%27indice

The movement of the type of nonlinear iteration found in so many systems can be visualized in terms of a baker kneading dough to make bread. With his fists the baker stretches out the dough and folds it over on itself, repeating this stretching and folding over again and again. In fact, mathematicians call what happens to a nonlinear equation when it is iterated "the baker transformation. "This transformation has the effect of moving neighboring points in the dough away from each other. A series of elastic threads placed in the dough would eventually become stretched and folded into a very complicated, unpredictable(and hence chaotic) pattern. Mathematically, this process of stretching and folding takes the form of a strange attractor. 2, record 73, English, - baker%27s%20transformation

Fabric Liners for Erosion Control Systems... In most situations where continuous flowing water is involved fabric protection of the underlying soil in itself is not sufficient. Domestic burners... employ either one of two methods to prepare the fuel oil for combustion. These are atomization(spraying) and vaporization(heating). Atomization or spraying is divided into three types, namely, high-pressure atomization, low-pressure atomization, and centrifugal atomization. With high-pressure atomization used by high-pressure gun-type burners, the oil pressure is built up to 100 psi by a pump and delivered through an oil line to a specially designed nozzle from which it sprays out into the combustion chamber in a vaporous cloud of tiny globules or droplets. This mist of fine oil droplets is met by a current of air moving down the blast(gun) tube, and the oil and air mix in the combustion chamber after leaving the burner. Ignition is accomplished with an electric spark. 2, record 81, English, - high%2Dpressure%20atomization

Jockeying is normally used when moving out of a tactical position enroute to the next bound or when, in a position and due to enemy fire it becomes necessary to move to an alternate position to cover the same arc. The primary reason for jockeying is to move out of the enemy's visual contact and then reappear in an unsuspected location 1, record 90, English, - jockeying

1, record 90, French, - %5C%22jockeying%5C%22
