Fisheries and Oceans. An MPA Pilot Project is not a legal designation. Legal designation of a Marine Protected Area can only occur after each step in the Framework has been successfully completed. The intent of Pilot Projects is to take selected areas through the steps of the MPA Framework. The results of ecological, technical, and socio-economic assessments will determine whether the site should move toward formal designation as an MPA.

La désignation légale d'une zone de protection marine est conditionnelle au succès de toutes les étapes définies dans le Cadre national. En effet, les projets pilotes ont pour but de faire franchir à des sites d'intérêt choisis toutes les étapes requises par le Cadre national pour l'établissement et la gestion des zones de protection marines. Les résultats des évaluations écologique, technique et socio-économique permettront de déterminer si le site d'intérêt dispose du potentiel nécessaire pour faire l'objet d'une désignation officielle de ZPM.
