A few factors likely made boss keys within games more common in the 1980s and early 1990s than they are today. Back then, most MS-DOS PCs [Microsoft disk operating system for the personal computers] were single-tasking machines, so you couldn’t quickly Alt+Tab away from the game to another window like you can today. Also, The Encyclopedia of Video Games speculates that boss keys were more popular when PC clones were more expensive and more likely to be located at work than in the home. 2, record 2, English, - boss%20button

An alternative to multitasking. Here multiple tasks are loaded into computer memory, where you can switch between them with a keystroke. Only one task, the foreground task, is running at any time-all the background tasks remain in suspended animation until you switch to them. The advantage is that you can switch between them instantly, and while they are the foreground task, they run at full speed. However, each task must have a full memory image, so you must have lots of memory on your system. The new MS-DOS 5. 0 has a task-switcher in its shell. 1, record 10, English, - task%20switching

A computer program, which runs on MS-DOS personal computers, is described that assists in the design of synthetic genes coding for proteins. The goal of the program is the design of a gene which(i) contains as many unique restriction sites as possible and(ii) uses a specific codon usage. The gene designed according to the criteria above is(i) suitable for ’modular mutagenesis’ experiments and(ii) optimized for expression. The program ’reverse-translates’ protein sequences into degenerated DNA sequences, generates a map of potential restriction sites and locates sequence positions where unique restriction sites can be accommodated. The nucleic acid sequence is then ’refined’ according to a specific codon usage to remove any degeneration. Unique restriction sites, if potentially present, can be ’forced’ into the degenerated nucleic acid sequence by using ’priority codes’ assigned to different restriction sequences. 1, record 12, English, - synthetic%20gene
