2, record 1, French, - fibre%20scintillante

In the active core, the flux is entirely fast. Therefore, the incident energy for fission reactions is in the fast flux range. In the targets, thermal neutron capture in Am-241 is higher in the epithermal range resulting in a higher overall Pu-238 production rate than the active core. Blanket Pu-238 then has the opportunity to fission using incident neutrons mostly in the epithermal to fast range. 1, record 28, English, - fast%20range

The idea of giving a weight to the particles, in proportion to their likely contribution to the result being sought. This should be associated with the Russian roulette consisting of “killing” particles whose weight is too low, with a probability that is proportional to the weight, and the “duplication” or “splitting” of particles that are too heavy. It can also be sometimes of interest to replace absorptions (capture and fission) by weight charges, without stopping the particles … 3, record 29, English, - splitting%20technique

… the optimization and quantification of particle splitting [is] a variance reduction technique that decreases the variance of a run, [sigma], or its relative error, R, while increasing its computational time, [tau]. This splitting technique is described in several papers, books, and reports. Geometry splitting associated with Russian roulette is one of the most widely used variance reduction techniques in Monte Carlo codes. When used effectively(i. e. splitting a volume in the right number of layers), this method causes a net increase in the figure of merit, FOM … [In a given example of splitting technique], an incident neutron n0 of weight W is split at the boundary crossing into two identical neutrons na and nb(same energy, direction) having half the weight of n0. The number of split particles and their weight are given by the ratio of weight associated with each volume of the problem. 1, record 29, English, - splitting%20technique

Splitting. 1, record 29, French, - technique%20du%20splitting

1, record 30, English, - epithermal%20range

Incoherent inelastic scattering. The most interesting component of thermal scattering is called "incoherent inelastic" because the neutron exchanges energy with the target molecule or crystalline lattice and all the scattered waves are assumed to combine incoherently without interference effects. This component is described in terms of a scattering function called "S of alpha and beta, where alpha and beta are reduced values for momentum transfer and energy transfer, respectively... 1, record 43, English, - incoherent%20inelastic%20scattering

Elastic scattering of neutrons by nuclei can occur in two ways. The more usual of the two interactions is the absorption of the neutron, forming a compound nucleus, followed by the re-emission of a neutron in such a way that the total kinetic energy is conserved and nucleus returns to its ground state. This is known as resonance elastic scattering(a collision where a nucleus absorbs a neutron and re-emits it, conserving kinetic energy). 1, record 44, English, - resonance%20elastic%20scattering

A supernova is a violent stellar explosion which destroys a star, while ejecting the products of nuclear burning into the gas between stars. The energy for some supernova explosions comes from the collapse of a massive star to a compact neutron star, with the mass of the Sun, but the size of a city. Elements out of which the Earth is formed had their origin in ancient supernova explosions in our own Milky Way Galaxy. 3, record 60, English, - stellar%20explosion

The method by which incident radiation interacts with the medium to cause ionization may be direct or indirect. Electromagnetic radiations (X rays and gamma photons) are indirectly ionizing; that is, they give up their energy in various interactions with cellular molecules, and the energy is then utilized to produce a fast-moving charged particle such as an electron. It is the electron that then secondarily may react with a target molecule. Charged particles, in contrast, strike the tissue or medium and directly react with target molecules, such as oxygen or water. These particulate radiations are directly ionizing radiations. 1, record 66, English, - gamma%20photon

The Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute(JAERI) has developed a neutron diffractometer "BIX-III" that is capable of identifying hydrogen atoms and water molecules in proteins and DNA. It has been used to successfully identify hydrogen atoms in rubredoxin, which functions to transfer electrons in living cells.... The technology combines a neutron imaging plate and an elastically bent silicon monochromator which eliminates monochromatic strong neutrons from the nuclear reactor. 2, record 71, English, - neutron%20imaging%20plate

A specialized radioactivity log of neutron-gamma log type. A neutron generator produces short bursts of high-energy neutrons(about 14 MeV), which are slowed in the borehole and nearby rocks to thermal energy level(about 0. 025 eV) ;capture by nuclei(especially chlorine) results in gamma-ray emissions. The log is used in cased oil wells to determine changes in fluid saturation during oil production. 2, record 72, English, - pulsed%20neutron%20log

Microquasars are thought to be binary-star systems with one of the stars either a superdense neutron star or a black hole. They emit X-rays and eject jets of subatomic particles at speeds approaching that of light. 2, record 73, English, - microquasar
Record number: 73, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Though the neutron stars or black holes in microquasars are only a few times the mass of the sun, the phenomena associated with them, such as the jets, are similar to those seen in active galaxies and quasars, believed to be powered by the gravitational energy of black holes with millions of times the mass of the sun. As such, the microquasars provide much closer "laboratories" for study of these phenomena, which remain poorly understood. 2, record 73, English, - microquasar
