What is neutron radiography? Neutron transmission radiography(NR) is based on the application of the universal law of attenuation of radiation passing through matter. 1, record 14, French, - neutron%20interrogateur

There are a number of neutron counting techniques that can be employed for verification of uranium material … Both passive and active neutron measurement techniques are used. In the passive mode, neutrons from spontaneously fissioning isotopes, such as240Pu and244Cm, are measured. In the active mode, an external source of neutrons(from a neutron generator or isotopic source) first irradiates the sample. Then the neutron signal from fissionable isotopes, such as239Pu or235U, is measured. Both modes are in common usage in a variety of applications. 1, record 15, English, - active%20neutron%20measurement%20technique

Ray effects. An artefact related to the method of discrete ordinates, known as the “ray effect, ” is illustrated … For a two-dimensional case, which is easier to represent, we have considered the problem of a point source in a purely absorbent medium. The arrows represent the directions of the discrete ordinates, and the squares represent the meshing of the spatial discretisation. Because neutrons are obliged to travel along the discrete directions, we note that only the shaded mesh elements will “see” a certain neutron flux, since the others cannot receive any neutrons. The resulting lines are clearly visible on the diagram. In practical cases, the artefact is never so clear, since the sources are spread out and there is scattering, but it can still be identified. The only way to improve this situation is to refine the angular meshing. 1, record 18, English, - ray%20effect

1, record 20, French, - source%20g%C3%A9n%C3%A9ralis%C3%A9e

Neutron coincidence counting. There is an important difference between the distribution in time of neutrons from an([alpha], n) source and from a spontaneous fission source. The neutrons from an([alpha], n) source are emitted at random times, unrelated to each other, whereas neutrons from spontaneous fission sources are emitted in small, time correlated groups. The size of these groups is determined by the neutron leakage multiplication. The technique of neutron coincidence counting can detect the existence, or absence, of these groups and thus establish the presence, or absence, of a spontaneous fission source. 1, record 25, English, - neutron%20coincidence%20counting

The neutron collar... is used to determine the uranium-235 content of fresh fuel for light water reactors. A neutron source(californium) causes the uranium-235 to fission whereupon it emits two or more neutrons at the same time. These coincident neutrons coming from the fission of uranium are detected in the collar which, in normal operation, would surround the fuel assembly. The detectors are capable of distinguishing the coincident fission neutrons from those originating from the californium source or from elsewhere. 1, record 26, English, - coincident%20neutron

1, record 27, French, - source%20%C3%A0%20spallation
