Sur certains canaux, on place, immédiatement en sortie, un dispositif de sélection de l'énergie des neutrons. Il s'agit soit d'un «monochromateur» cristallin qui va effectuer une réflexion sélective du faisceau (dans le plan horizontal dit plan expérimental), soit plus rarement d'un dispositif mécanique tournant autour d'un axe orthogonal au faisceau («chopper» de Fermi). Les monochromateurs cristallins sont des monocristaux souvent en graphite pyrolitique, plus rarement en germanium, silicium ou cuivre écroui. Parfois, on utilise la technique particulière, rigide mais bon marché.
