What is uranium enrichment? Enrichment is a process that increases the capacity of uranium to fuel a nuclear chain reaction, either for use in nuclear power plants or for nuclear weapons. Uranium primarily occurs naturally as two isotopes : 99. 3% is uranium-238 and 0. 7% is uranium-235. Their atoms are identical except for the number of neutrons in the nucleus : uranium-238 has three more and this makes it less able to fission. Uranium enrichment is used to increase the percentage of the fissile U-235. 2, record 1, English, - uranium%20enrichment

1, record 1, Spanish, - enriquecimiento%20de%20uranio

Everything that we can see and touch is made up of particles, the basic building blocks of nature. Particles like protons, neutrons, and electrons compose the atoms of the computer or phone you are touching right now.... Many technologies we commonly use today are the results of research spin-off from particle physics. These byproducts were developed to build and run experiments or to support the activities of the particle physics community. Two impactful examples include medical scanners used in hospitals and the World Wide Web. Both are indirect products of fundamental research conducted by particle physicists while conducting their primary research. 1, record 3, English, - particle%20physicist

Uranium-water power reactors have a complicated core composition, and temperature changes, the influence of which exceeds that of delayed neutrons several times, are important in the reactivity balance of such reactors. The accuracy with which the temperature effect of the reactivity can be predicted by calculation techniques depends greatly upon the extent to which these techniques correctly describe the physics of the development of the process and … the accuracy decreases considerably in proportion to the complexity of the core composition. 1, record 16, English, - temperature%20effect

In the most common type of high temperature reactor (HTR) fuel, tiny particles of nuclear fuel are coated with three or four layers of coatings which are impenetrable to fission products up to a temperature of 2000 celsius. About 20,000 particles, bonded with graphite are massed together to form a spherical fuel element with a diameter of about 6 centimeters. The pebbles are... designed to passively limit the amount of heat unleashed by the nuclear fission reactions that drive the reactor. The fissionable material is divided into groups of 100 million billion uranium-235 atoms scattered within a 0. 5 mm sphere of uranium dioxide. That core is coated with four containment layers.... Some 15, 000 carbon-coated uranium dioxide kernels, looking like nuclear poppy seeds, are embedded in a tennis ball-size graphite and resin matrix. Graphite acts to slow the fission neutrons and so acts as an embedded moderator. The matrix is then encased in a 5 mm pure carbon shell, sintered, annealed, and machined to a uniform diameter of 6 cm. 2, record 18, English, - fuel%20pebble

Nuclear reactors can be controlled by a mechanical control rod system for a very subtle reason. In a chain reaction there are only fractions of seconds between one fission event and the next one(s), initiated by the former. However, since a small fraction of the neutrons needed to keep the chain going are generated with a delay in the range of ten seconds the necessary response time of the control system is in the range of 0. 1 seconds, thus making mechanical control possible in the first place. For plutonium the delayed neutron fraction is almost a factor of three smaller than for uranium, increasing demands on the control system. 2, record 19, English, - mechanical%20control%20rod
