On January 1, 2002, the towns and cities which were grouped, since January 1, 1970, under the Communauté urbaine de l'Outaouais(CUO), sometimes called "the Greater Hull, "became one city. The new city of Gatineau comes from the merger of the town of Aylmer, the cities of Buckingham, Gatineau, Hull and the town of Masson-Angers. 6, record 3, English, - Communaut%C3%A9%20urbaine%20de%20l%27Outaouais

After 1983, no English name was official for the urban community; consequently "Outaouais Urban Community" has never been the name of the administrative body. Moreover, "Outaouais" being the name of the provincial Administrative Region no. 7, it has never been translated; consequently, "Ottawa Urban Community" (OUC) is incorrect. The only instance in which the French "Outaouais" has "Ottawa" as equivalent in English, is in the name of the "rivière des Outaouais - Ottawa River", "Outaouais - Ottawa" being the name of the Algonquian people (and the name of their Ojibwa language) established in the area at the time of the first settlements. 6, record 3, English, - Communaut%C3%A9%20urbaine%20de%20l%27Outaouais

The use of silver as a trading commodity [with Indigenous peoples in North America] began around 1750 and was initially manufactured by French and English silversmiths in Europe. Later silver was manufactured in Quebec City, Montreal, New York, Philadelphia, and Detroit. Trade silver was often melted down and shaped into special silver pieces which resembled jewelry. Since they were so easily transported, they lent themselves perfectly to commercial trade. 2, record 9, English, - trade%20silver

When a taxi driver of an unoccupied taxi is seeking passengers on a road unknown to him or her in a large city, what should the driver do? Alternatives include cruising around the road or waiting for a time period at the roadside in the hopes of finding a passenger or just leaving for another road enroute to a destination he [or she] knows(e. g., hotel taxi rank) ?... There could be different answers to the question poised above, but one fundamental problem is how the driver learns about the likelihood of finding passengers on a road that is new to him [or her. ] 7, record 12, English, - unoccupied%20taxi

One of the first things an installation contractor will do when evaluating an existing residence or new home site is check the pressure of the city water supply(if there is one), as this is the default option to supply a fire sprinkler system. This may simply involve placing a pressure gauge on a hose outlet and turning it on. If the water main doesn’t deliver sufficient pressure..., the contractor will have to look at alternate options, whether that involves adding a pump to boost the pressure of the city water or using an elevated tank, a pressure tank, or a standard tank with a pump. 2, record 17, English, - elevated%20tank

Since the beginning of our French colony, the habitants of New France created a rowdy tradition of getting together just before Lent to eat, drink and be merry. At this time, this intense period of revelry was already designated as the Carnival-a word of Italian origin meaning Mardi Gras. The custom of celebrating from the end of January until mid-February has long been popular. The first large winter Carnival in Québec City, the world's snow capital, took place in 1894. Often faced with winter's hardships, the city's population reinvented this popular tradition with a winter celebration that warmed up the hearts of all of it revellers. Interrupted by two wars, then the economic crisis of 1929, the Carnival was held sporadically until the second half of the century. In 1954, in the context of the economic development of the Old Capital, a group of business people relaunched the festivities. That year, Bonhomme was born and elected the event's representative. The first official edition of the Québec Winter Carnival took place in 1955. The Carnival snowballed into an undeniable manifestation for the entire Québec City population, and was an important vehicle for tourism and economical activity in the city. 1, record 25, English, - Qu%C3%A9bec%20Winter%20Carnival

1, record 25, French, - Carnaval%20de%20Qu%C3%A9bec

It seems that most of the playgrounds in the USA have limited interest for children let alone for parents. The complete dependency on manufactured play equipment that is only good for climbing, swinging, sliding, etc. had a negative impact on "play". The "hiding places", "watery places" and "sandy surfaces" that Mom no. 2 talks about have disappeared or disappearing. 1, record 43, Spanish, - desertizaci%C3%B3n

Rubanisation is a re-conceptualisation of human settlements in which the city and the countryside are considered as one space, not two as it is now-city and countryside are regarded as separate realms. Rubanisation stems from the belief that the continued consideration of the rural and the urban as two distinct realms is unsustainable in terms of social justice, cultural justice and environmental justice. This mode of thinking calls for a new spatial geometry of integrated development that offers real viable choices for living, one that is supported by environmentally sustainable technology and ethical lifestyle. 3, record 62, English, - rubanization

... Professor Tay [Kheng Soon] introduced his concept of "rubanization" (derived from rural-urbanization) and "Ruban Clusters," which consist in their basic form of an urban core that is just one kilometer in diameter (to promote pedestrianization over auto-based transportation) with two main arterial roads running through the urban center at 90 degrees for long-distance transport to and fro the cluster. 1, record 62, English, - rubanization

Usages do not agree on the meaning of the adjectives "Greater" and "Metropolitan" sometimes considered synonyms. Usually, "Greater" means a large city with its surrounding suburbs, while "Metropolitan, "usually said of a metropolis and its suburbs, includes also the inhabited region surrounding the former. The expression "Greater Montréal" was understood as grouping all the municipalities of the Île de Montréal(or Montréal Island) forming the new city of Montréal since 1 January 2002, but as excluding those on Jésus Island, Bizard Island and the South Shore. To include all of these, the expressions "Metropolitan Montréal" or "Greater Montréal area" were used. To include all of these, the expression "Metropolitan Montréal" or "Greater Montréal area" was used. "But, since the fusion of all the cities on Montréal Island to form the new city, the expression "Greater Montréal" can take a new meaning and comprise all the insular cities and municipalities of the region, and the expression "Metropolitan Montréal, "mean the former and all the cities and municipalities of the region on the North Shore of the Rivière des Mille Îles and the corresponding ones on the South Shore of the St. Lawrence Seaway. 1, record 74, English, - Metropolitan%20Montr%C3%A9al

Brahms-Schoenberg Quartet was the first abstract work Balanchine designed for the stage of the New York State Theater, which replaced the smaller City Center of Music and Drama as the home of New York City Ballet in 1964. Balanchine often said that chamber music was not suitable for large ballets, since chamber pieces typically are "too long, with too many repeats, and are meant for small rooms. "Schoenberg crafted his orchestration of the Brahms G minor piano quartet in 1930's out of a similar dissatisfaction, telling a critic that the chamber version "is always very badly played, as the better the pianist, the louder he plays, and one hears nothing of the strings. "The title refers to the fact that the 20th-century Austrian composer Arnold Schoenberg orchestrated this piano quartet by 19th-century German composer Johannes Brahms. 1, record 80, English, - Brahms%2DSchoenberg%20Quartet

The New York Mercantile Exchange(NYMEX) is the world's largest physical commodity futures exchange located in New York City. Its two principal divisions are the New York Mercantile Exchange and the New York Commodities Exchange(COMEX) which were once independent companies but are now merged. The New York Mercantile Exchange, Inc. is currently a large private company. The New York Mercantile Exchange handles billions of dollars worth of energy products, metals, and other commodities being bought and sold on the trading floor and the overnight electronic trading computer system. The prices quoted for transactions on the exchange are the basis for prices that people pay for throughout the world. In 1933, the COMEX was established through the merger of four smaller exchanges : the National Metal Exchange, the Rubber Exchange of New York, the National Raw Silk Exchange, and the New York Hide Exchange. On august 3, 1994, the NYMEX and COMEX finally merged under the NYMEX. Now, the NYMEX operates in a state of the art trading facility and office building with two trading floors in the World Financial Center in downtown Manhattan. 3, record 89, English, - New%20York%20Mercantile%20Exchange

St. Stephen's Day in Hungary is observed on August 20, the day on which the allegedly sacred relics of Stephen I of Hungary were transferred to the city of Buda. This day is the ultimate public holiday in Hungary. Stephen I, or "Stephanus" as he was named in Latin by Pope Sylvester II, was originally a pagan chieftain's son answering to the name "Vajk". He gouged out the eyes and poured boiling lead into the ears of his arch rival(Vasoly) and was awarded a crown by the pope for forcing catholicism onto the Hungarian people. The converted king was canonized by Pope Gregory VII in AD 1083 and has since been referred to as St Stephen of Hungary. Under communism St. Stephen's Day was referred to by the Hungarians as "The celebration of the new bread-the end of the harvest". 1, record 90, English, - St%2E%20Stephen%27s%20Day

Black Hand, symbol and name for a criminal and terroristic secret society, and especially associated with the Mafia and the Camorra. The Black Hand flourished in Sicily in the late 19th century, and in the United States it was especially active in New York City at the beginning of the 20th century. It is estimated that at one time 90% of New York City's Italian population was blackmailed by letters threatening death and marked with a black hand. Famous incidents associated with the Black Hand include the murder(1890) in New Orleans of chief of police Daniel Hennessy and the shooting(1909), in Palermo, Italy, of Lt. Joseph Petrosino of the New York City police. 2, record 94, English, - Black%20Hand

The society was so named because those who did not comply with its demands received notes imprinted with a black hand to warn them of terrible reprisals. Many Italians were expected to give up portions of their wages to this criminal group, and if they didn’t, they were repeatedly harassed and even killed. 3, record 94, English, - Black%20Hand
