A composite primary endpoint is used when a study has a fairly rare primary endpoint. Rare events may require a very large, expensive trial in order to get statistically significant results. Let's say a study is investigating a new drug for anaphylaxis(a severe allergic reaction which can lead to death). If "death" is the endpoint, a trial could need about a million people to record one death. A composite primary endpoint might be "any non-fatal or fatal allergic reaction"—which would require much smaller numbers(thousands, or possibly hundreds). 2, record 4, English, - composite%20primary%20endpoint

Drug approval refers to a process that is under the jurisdiction of the Therapeutics Products Program, a division of Health Canada that reviews the safety and efficacy data for each new drug submission. If a new drug submission is found to be acceptable on the basis of clinical trial efficacy and toxicity data, the Therapeutics Products Program issues a notice of compliance and the associated product labelling. The drug is then approved and may be prescribed by physicians and dispensed by pharmacies in Canada. However, such approval does not mean that provincial drug plans or other third-party payers will pay for the approved drug. The decision regarding who pays is made by each province. 1, record 5, English, - approved%20drug

In the absence of efficacy data, immunobridging can be adopted as an approach to infer the likelihood of a vaccine's protective effect by translating immunogenicity to vaccine efficacy. Amid the evolution of the pharmaceutical industry, and more recently catalyzed by [COVID-19] and its implications on drug demand, delivery and the supply chain, parenteral drugs are experiencing increased demand. Whether administered intravenously, intramuscularly, or subcutaneously, the format creates new and critical avenues for drug delivery thanks to some favorable attributes around safety and efficacy. For one, parenterals allow for a controlled release—either gradual or instantaneous—that an oral medication cannot always provide. This format is critical to providing immediate pain relief, such as with epidurals during childbirth, or for continuously managing fluid levels, such as with saline solutions delivered [intravenously. ] 6, record 13, English, - parenteral%20drug

Gene expression microarrays provide a snapshot of all the transcriptional activity in a biological sample. Unlike most traditional molecular biology tools, which generally allow the study of a single gene or a small set of genes, microarrays facilitate the discovery of totally novel and unexpected functional roles of genes. 2, record 21, French, - recherche%20th%C3%A9rapeutique

Every drug receives three distinct names : the chemical name, the generic(or nonproprietary) name, and the brand(or proprietary or trademark) name.... The generic name is commonly used by health care professionals and is usually created when a new drug is ready to be marketed. Although the manufacturer or sponsor of the drug has exclusive right of manufacture during the 17 years of the drug's patent, it never owns the generic name.... In the United States, the generic name must first be approved by the U. S. Adopted Name(USAN) Council and then by the World Health Organization(WHO).... After approving the generic name, the Council submits the name to WHO, which has final approval.... After being approved by WHO, the drug is assigned an international nonproprietary name. 6, record 31, English, - nonproprietary%20name
Record number: 31, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Once a chemical substance has become frequently cited in the literature, it will be identified with simplified nomenclature popularly known as a "generic" name. This nonproprietary name is preferred in database indexing over all other types of drug nomenclature. MEDLINE [registered trademark] cites the United States Adopted Name (USAN) as a standard, when available. USANs are officially approved designations adopted by the FDA for uniformity in labeling and regulatory references. EMBASE®, on the other hand, prefers International Nonproprietary Names (INNs), promulgated by the World Health Organization, as drug descriptors. Caution: the USAN and INN "generic" name for the same drug may differ. Other official nomenclature standards include: British Approved Name (BAN), Nordiska Farmakopenamden (NFN), and Dénomination Commune Francaise (DCF). 7, record 31, English, - nonproprietary%20name

Although, the drug delivery system(DDS) concept is not new, great progress has recently been made in the treatment of a variety of diseases. En intégrant la biologie structurale, cette pharmacologie, dite inverse, devient une approche majeure pour concevoir de nouveaux médicaments. 1, record 43, French, - pharmacologie%20inverse

Recent media reports have painted a relentlessly gloomy picture of the status of AIDS drug development. Yet much useful information on treatment emerged at the 10th International Conference on AIDS in Yokohama, Japan(August 7-12, 1994). Encouraging treatment developments presented in Yokohama include the following : Recombinant human growth hormone therapy significantly increases weight gain as represented by fat-free lean body mass among people with AIDS-related wasting. AZT treatment dramatically reduces the rate of HIV transmission from mother to infant. Acyclovir co-treatment with anti-HIV therapy significantly increases survival time among people with AIDS. Oral ganciclovir appears to be an effective primary prophylaxis for cytomegalovirus disease. The protease inhibitor drug saquinavir reduces viral load and increases CD4 cell counts significantly more when used in a triple combination with AZT and ddC compared to 2 double combinations(AZT plus ddC or saquinavir plus AZT). Quantitative polymerase chain reaction(PCR) and branched chain DNA(bDNA) testing for measuring HIV load is expected to become a major new tool to help guide individual treatment decisions and to evaluate anti-HIV therapies in clinical studies. 1, record 56, English, - AIDS%20drug

5, record 65, English, - international%20nonproprietary%20name

Over-the-horizon(OTH) radar systems were first developed during the Cold War as part of the early warning defense network. With the end of the Cold War, research into OTH radar continued, with a new focus : detection of illegal aircraft engaged in drug smuggling. Current research had its genesis in U. S. Air Force and Navy laboratories in the 1960s, as well as at Stanford University. At present, the United States, Russia, China, and Australia employ OTH radar for surveillance purposes. Much of the current effort is concentrated on the development of relocatable OTH radar(ROTHR), first demonstrated by the Navy in the early 1980s. 2, record 72, English, - over%2Dthe%2Dhorizon

An ingenious experiment offers hope for a new kind of surgery for cancer. Kenneth Culver(National Cancer Institute-USA spliced a snippet of DNA from a herpes virus into one of these retroviruses and injected the combination into rats suffering from brain cancer. Since cancer cells are about the only cells that are dividing in a cancer-infected brain, the viruses were supposed to invade those cells and multiply. After five days, the rats were treated with an antiherpes drug. The hope was that the toxin would kill herpes-infected cancer cells and leave the rest of the brain alone. In 11 of the 14 rats, the tumors disappeared completely. The results were so promising that an NIH watchdog committee has already approved a similar test on humans. The risks are high. The researchers will, in effect, be putting mouse genes directly into human brains. But the payoff could be great. Cancer Institute researchers are now searching for other inoperable cancers that might succumb to what they are calling molecular surgery. 1, record 80, English, - molecular%20surgery

In preclinical studies, the repeated administration of Endostatin(TM) consistently shrank primary tumors and, unlike traditional chemotherapy, showed no drug resistance over time. Antiangiogenic drugs have the potential to treat cancer as well as a variety of other angiogenic diseases such as blindness and arthritis that depend on new blood vessel growth. EntreMed previously licensed exclusive worldwide rights to Angiostatin(TM), another natural antiangiogenic molecule discovered at Children's Hospital(Cell, Volume 79, pp. 315-328, October 21, 1994). 1, record 84, English, - antiangiogenic%20molecule

1, record 84, French, - mol%C3%A9cule%20antiangiog%C3%A9nique

Developed by California Sea Grant researchers, a unique class of marine compounds generated $686, 000 in royalties last year and over a million dollars to date, placing them among the university's top ten royalty-producing inventions. The compounds, a closely related group called pseudopterosins, are extracted from a creature called the Caribbean sea whip. They have been licensed to two companies for very different purposes. For medical use as anti-inflammatory drugs, pseudopterosins have been licensed to a small pharmaceutical firm. The company has completed preclinical tests of one pseudopterosin, a potent topical anti-inflammatory compound, and filed an investigational new drug application with the U. S. Food and Drug Administration. It is expected that clinical trials on human subjects will focus on the drug's potential as therapy for irritant contact dermatitis. 1, record 85, English, - pseudopterosin

A word acquiring new meaning in 1991 is : COMMUNITARIANISM. Local citizens are scared of crime, and some are arguing that expansive notions of civil liberties must yield to community rights at times. Communitarians contend, for example, that civil libertarians should abandon objections to measures such as drunk-driving check-points, antiloitering ordinances, prosecuting drug-using pregnant women and police questioning of "suspicious" persons to combat rampant drug and alcohol abuse. They also want to make divorce laws more "prochild" by making it harder for couples with kids to untie the knot. 3, record 86, English, - communitarianism
