Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 CONT
The processes used for salting cod are generally the same in most areas and time periods, with some local variations. The colonial New England cod fishery is typical. Cod was either "dry cured" or "green cured. "For a dry cure, fish were usually cleaned, split, salted, and then stored aboard ship after each haul so they would not deteriorate at sea. Once the the ship returned to shore, the fish would be repacked, resalted, and eventually sun dried into tough, durable slabs that could be stacked and stored like wood. Dry curing was used when fishers traveled long distances to fishing grounds. In contrast, green curing, in which the fish were cleaned, salted, and dried on land rather than at sea, was used on shorter trips to nearby fishing grounds.... Because it was a faster process, green curing did not wring as much water out of the fish as dry curing. Green-cured fish therefore was considered to be of lower quality and did not last as long. 3, record 3, English, - green%20fish

St George's Day is celebrated by the several nations, kingdoms, countries, and cities of which Saint George is the patron saint. Most countries that observe St George's Day celebrate it on 23 April, the traditionally accepted date of Saint George's death in 303 AD. This day is May 6 for Eastern Orthodox Churches who use the Julian calendar for 2011 it has been moved to the 25th for those on the New Calendar due to it falling on Holy Saturday.... Countries that celebrate St George's Day include England, Canada, Portugal, Cyprus, Greece, Georgia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the Republic of Macedonia. Cities include Moscow in Russia, Genova in Italy, Ljubljana in Slovenia, Beirut in Lebanon, Qormi and Victoria in Malta and many others. It is also celebrated in the old kingdoms and counties of the Crown of Aragon in Spain—Aragon, Catalonia, Valencia, and Palestine. 2, record 26, English, - St%2E%20George%27s%20Day

St. George is the patron saint of England. He is the patron of soldiers and archers, cavalry and chivalry, of farmers and field workers, Boy Scouts and butchers, of horses, riders and saddlers. He is also the patron saint of Aragon, Catalonia, Genoa Georgia, Germany, Greece, Istanbul, Lithuania, Moscow, Palestine, Portugal, and of Venice (second to St. Mark). According to legend, St. George, a soldier of the Imperial Army, rescues a town in what is now Libya from the tyranny of a people-eating dragon. St. George overpowered the beast and then offered to kill it if the townspeople would convert to Christianity and be baptized. The story is that there were 15,000 conversions on the spot. Openly espousing Christianity was dangerous and eventually the authorities of Emperor Diocletian arrested George. He was martyred about 303 AD. 3, record 26, English, - St%2E%20George%27s%20Day

Used primarily in New England, the Aquatic Base Flow method uses historic flow data to determine the median flow for the lowest flow month(typically August or September), and applies that level to the remainder of the year... It is simple to use, if historic data is available, but cannot account easily for site-specific biological concerns; nor can the method adequately and defensibly adjust for spawning or incubation. 3, record 31, English, - aquatic%20base%20flow%20method

A saltbox is a building with a long, pitched roof that slopes down to the back, generally a wooden frame house. A saltbox has just one story in the back and two stories in the front. The flat front and central chimney are recognizable features, but the asymmetry of the unequal sides and the long, low rear roof line are the most distinctive features of a saltbox, which takes its name from its resemblance to a wooden lidded box in which salt was once kept. 3, record 33, English, - saltbox%20house
Record number: 33, Textual support number: 2 CONT
More a building shape than a building style, the saltbox takes its name from a sloping gable roof that gives the house the shape of a wooden box used to store salt in Colonial times, like the reproduction of a 1770s saltbox by Replitiques. The saltbox house is formed by a one-story addition across the rear of a 1-1/2 or 2-story building. Initially an easy method of enlarging a house, it eventually became an accepted building form, particularly in New England after 1680. The style was common in New England before 1830, and it remained popular in other parts of the country until the late 1800s. A variation of early Colonial or Cape Cod style houses, the practical and simple saltbox was often a single room deep. Given that often a dozen or more people crowded into these early homes, colonists soon began looking for practical ways to expand living space. 1, record 33, English, - saltbox%20house

The War of the Spanish Succession(1701-1714) was a major European conflict that arose in 1701 after the death of the last Spanish Habsburg king, Charles II. Charles had bequeathed all of his possessions to Philip, duc d’Anjou-a grandson of the French King Louis XIV-who thereby became Philip V of Spain. The war began slowly, as the Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I fought to protect his own dynasty's claim to the Spanish inheritance. As Louis XIV began to expand his territories more aggressively, however, other European nations(chiefly England and the Dutch Republic) entered on the Holy Roman Empire's side to check French expansion(and, in the English case, to safeguard the Protestant succession). Other states joined the coalition opposing France and Spain in an attempt to acquire new territories, or to protect existing dominions. The war was fought not only in Europe, but also in north America, where the conflict became known to the English colonists as Queen Anne's War. 1, record 39, English, - War%20of%20the%20Spanish%20Succession

Robert H. Goddard was the world's first person to ever launch a liquid fueled rocket. He was a New England physics professor and an American rocket pioneer. In the early 1900's, Dr. Goddard considered the idea of a liquid fueled rocket utilizing hydrogen and oxygen. In his studies he noticed that solid fueled rockets produced a lower exhaust velocity, which means it would make the rocket go faster. He pioneered the invention of rockets that used liquid oxygen and hydrogen. He also discovered "Rapid Reactions" which was the rapid loading of liquid fuels. He also noticed that liquid hydrogen is best from a higher exhaust velocity. 3, record 45, English, - liquid%2Dfueled%20rocket

In New England, at least one killing frost and preferably a substantial period of normally cool weather must precede this warm spell in order for it to be considered a true Indian summer. It does not occur every year, and in some years there may be two or three Indian summers. The term is most often heard in the northeastern United States, but its usage extends throughout English-speaking countries. It dates back at least to 1778, but its origin is not certain; the most probable suggestions relate it to the way that the American Indians availed themselves of this extra opportunity to increase their winter stores. The comparable period in Europe is termed the Old Wives’ summer, and, poetically, may be referred to as halcyon days. In England, dependent upon dates of occurrence, such a period may be called St. Martin's summer, St. Luke's summer, and formerly All-hallown summer. 4, record 48, English, - Indian%20summer

8, record 48, French, - %C3%A9t%C3%A9%20des%20Indiens

Bungee Jumping first started hundreds of years ago in the South Pacific island of Vanuatu. Young native tribesmen used to leap off huge trees with vines tied to their ankles, as a test of manhood. Contrary to popular belief, modern Bungee Jumping was founded in 1979 from the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol, England. Since then Bungee Jumping has spread to many other countries across the globe, of which America, France, New Zealand and Britain are but a few. 4, record 58, English, - bungee%20jumping

Stock ale is one of the few classic beer styles to have originated in the United States, and the style has a strong New England heritage. Stock ales were brewed and fermented in the traditional ale manner and then aged in cool rooms called "stock cellars". Background: Some patients with inflammatory bowel disease have anemia that is not responsive to iron administration and not due to folate or B12 deficiency. One hypothesis is that inflammatory cytokines decrease erythropoietin production and create resistance to the effect of erythropoietin, leading to a relative deficiency of this hormone. This study was a randomized, double-blind trial of recombinant erythropoietin (epoietin) in treating patients with inflammatory bowel disease and anemia refractory to iron therapy. 3, record 74, English, - recombinant%20erythropoietin
