CONT

Except for several complex species such as ammonium chloroplatinate, (NH4)2PtCl6, ammonium salts are very soluble in water. In aqueous solutions, they ionize to produce the ammonium ion, NH4+, and an acid anion. Solutions of ammonium salts of strong or moderately strong acids are acidic as a result of hydrolysis of the ammonium ion.

CONT

In addition to the familiar molecular acids, two classes of ionic acids emerge from the new definition [Bronsted-Lowry]. The second and more interesting class consists of positively charged ions(cations), such as ammonium ion... which can be derived by the addition of a proton to a molecular base, in this case ammonia(NH3).

OBS

Every cation is necessarily an ion; anion must be either a cation or an anion.

CONT

Chirality about the trigonal axis. The quenchers are 6-coordinate Co(III) complexes with the general stoichiometric formula Co(NH3) 4(ndp) or Co(NH3) 4(ntp), where ndp denotes a diphosphate nucleotide ligand and ntp denotes a triphosphate nucleotide ligand. In these complexes the nucleotide ligand is coordinated to Co(III) via bidentate chelation in which the donor moieties are oxygen atoms from adjacent phosphate groups(beta, alpha in ndp and gamma, beta in ntp nucleotides). The nucleotides used as ligands in Ln in this study are the following : adenosine diphosphate and triphosphate(adp and atp), guanosine diphosphate and triphosphate(gdp and gtp), inosine diphosphate and triphosphate(idp and itp), cytidine triphosphate(ctp), uridine triphosphate(utp), and deoxythymidine triphosphate(ttp). The Co(NH3) 4(nucleotide) complexes have dissymmetric structures both within and external to the Co(NH3) 4(phosphate) coordination unit, but under the conditions employed in this study, they exist as mixtures of diastereomers that are quasi-racemic with respect to chirality within the Co(NH3) 4(phosphate) coordination units.

We have recently used NH3 lasers in the far-infrared(FIR) to test the predictions of the laser equations(Lorenz-model) about instabilities of the most basic type of lasers.

CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Climate Change
DEF

An atmospheric gas which, like nitrogen or hydrogen, does not contribute to the global warming, or which, at very least, does so only indirectly, like carbon monoxide.

CONT

Sagan and Mullen suggested that ammonia(NH3), an efficient absorber of infrared, could have warmed the climate if the gas represented just 100 out of every million molecules of the air. Subsequent studies have shown, however, that the sun would have rapidly converted ammonia into the nongreenhouse gases nitrogen and hydrogen unless it was continually resupplied to the atmosphere from the plant's surface.

Domaine(s)

DEF
