Subject field(s)
  • Chemistry
  • Secondary Fibres (Textile)
  • Building Insulation and Acoustical Design
  • Biomass Energy
DEF

Any fiber based on esters or ethers of cellulose.

CONT

Cellulosic fibres(cotton and viscose rayon) dyes with direct dyes, vat dyer, and fibre reactive dyes suffer severe fading on chamber exposures to 940 [micrograms]/m³(0. 5 ppm) NO2 with high humidity(90%) and high temperatures 30°C.

Domaine(s)

  • Fibres textiles secondaires
  • Isolation et acoustique architecturale
  • Énergie de la biomasse
DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Chemistry
  • Pollutants
DEF

Catalytic splitting of ozone molecules into atomic and diatomic oxygen.

OBS

The chlorine and nitrogen radicals may interact through ClO + NO2=ClNO3 forming chlorine nitrate. This could be an important reaction from the point of view of ozone photochemistry because it removed radicals from both the chlorine and nitrogen systems, and it is these radicals that may play such a large role in the catalytic destruction of ozone.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Chimie
  • Agents de pollution
DEF

  • Air Pollution
DEF

A greenhouse gas produced by the action of sunlight on hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides in the air which is an ingredient of smog.

CONT

Peroxyacyl nitrates(PANs) are an important component of summer smog. They can cause eye irritation and plant damage. Moreover, PANs are a temporary reservoir for reactive intermediates involved in summer smog formation. It is essential to know the kinetics and mechanisms of their formation and destruction for inclusion in models of atmospheric chemistry. PANs are formed in the atmosphere as secondary products following the OH-initiated photo-oxidation of aldehydes and the generation of peroxyacyl radicals. The Peroxyacyl radicals may react either with NO2 to generate PANs or with NO to form radical products and CO2...

OBS

PAN is one of the oxidation products of NOx. Its residence time is sufficiently long that if global combustion activities increase significantly, it could increase in concentration in the atmosphere.

Nitrogen Dioxide. The long-term standards for NO2 for all countries are in the vicinity of 100 [micrograms]/m3(0. 05) NO2 based on protecting the health of sensitive groups of the population. Of the countries with short-term standards(daily or one-hour averages), the primary criteria have been health effects, but consideration has also been given to the role of NO2 in the formation of photochemical pollution(Japan and West Germany), plant damage(Canada), and sensory perception(Canada).

DEF

Molecule that captures and retains chlorine for a time.

CONT

A chlorine atom or a chlorine monoxide radical combines with another molecule to form a stable product that temporarily acts as a chlorine "reservoir" ;when chlorine is thus engaged(as it is most of the time in the normal atmosphere), it is unavailable to attack ozone. Two important reservoirs are chlorine nitrate(C1ONO2), formed by the combination of chlorine monoxide and nitrogen dioxide(NO2) and hydrochloric acid(HC1), formed from a chlorine atome and methane(CH4).

OBS

The adverse effects of NO2 on fabrics(dye fading for a number of fabrics and dye combinations and yellowing of some white fabrics) have been well established, but the degree to which economic losses occur due to exposure to NO2 is unclear. The two main problems in quantifying these effects are : the laboratory studies demonstrating the effects are not representative of real-life exposure; and the effects of NO2 have not yet been successfully separated from the effects of temperature, humidity, and other pollutants.
