Domestically, CJIRU-CBRN is a branch of the National Chemical Biological Radiological and Nuclear and Explosive(CBRNE) Response Team in association with the RCMP [Royal Canadian Mounted Police] and Public Health Agency of Canada(PHAC), responsible for CBRN counter-terrorism operations. Additionally, they provide direct and indirect CBRN support to CANSOFCOM operations. Internationally, CJIRU-CBRN provides CBRN support to CF [Canadian Forces] elements in all theatres of operations, including counter proliferation and force protection tasks.

Subject field(s)
  • Radiation Protection
  • Radioactive Contamination
CONT

The perception of environmental radioactivity has evolved over the past century, starting with an extended period of scientific exploration until the detonation of the first atomic bomb. … Some countries are decreasing their weapons arsenal, but this still requires a safe method to dispose of the radioactive materials, especially to stop nuclear proliferation.

[A] Pakistani nuclear scientist... had developed a transnational nuclear proliferation network reaching from Southeast Asia to Europe, and was making available sensitive technology and WMD-related materials to rogue nations willing to pay.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Systèmes d'armes
CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Nuclear Fission Reactors
OBS

Fast reactors can be operated in a "burner" mode... Such reactors can "store" temporarily large quantities of plutonium as fuel in their cores, and, in the event that nuclear fission has to be replaced one day by better sources of concentrated energy, they can dispose of, or "burn, "inventories of plutonium and actinides. This also eliminates plutonium "mines", a potential source of material for nuclear weapons proliferation.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Réacteurs nucléaires de fission
DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Titles of International Laws and Regulations
  • CBRNE Weapons
  • Rules of Court
OBS

The United States of America and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics oppose the proliferation of nuclear weapons, chemical weapons, missiles capable of carrying such weapons, and certain other missiles and missile technologies. The more nations that possess such weapons, the more difficult it will be to realize the desire of people everywhere to achieve effective arms control and disarmament measures and to reduce the threat of war. Weapons proliferation can provoke or intensify insecurity and hostility among nations, and threatens mankind with warfare of unprecedented destructiveness.
