NUCLEAR STEAM TURBINE [5 records]

Record 1 2025-12-23

English

Subject field(s)
  • Types of Ships and Boats
CONT

There are very few icebreakers fitted with steam turbine systems other than nuclear powered vessels. Nuclear powered icebreakers use their steam turbines to generate electrical power to operate electric propulsion motors, in exactly the same way conventional diesel-electric icebreakers operate – only the prime mover is different.

CONT

… a test for valve availability should be performable whether the turbine is in the single or sequential mode of governor valve operation. In the sequential mode, the turbine stresses and shock produced by partial steam admission or operation can become excessive at lower load levels … Since nuclear turbines typically have only four arcs of steam admission with greater turbine stress and shock in partial arc operation, it would not be unusual for stop valve tests to be limited to single valve operation in nuclear turbines.

CANDU plants can be operated in two basic modes : reactor-following-turbine(RFT) and turbine-following-reactor(TFR). Steam generator pressure control plays a pivotal role in these schemes. In TFR mode the reactor power is held constant at a level set by the operator and the turbine governor control valves are used to regulate steam pressure. This mode is suitable for unit operation within a large system network where it is used to supply the base loads while other units are used to supply peak loads. Since reactor conditions remain constant, this mode also constitutes a safer state of operation from the nuclear plant perspective. The control system reverts to this mode of operation during plant upsets. In RFT mode, the turbine load is set by the operator and the reactor is used to regulate steam pressure. In both TFR and RFT modes, the turbine is also used to regulate speed and assist the system in meeting short-term changes in electrical load demand. In RFT mode, the governor control valves also attempt to maintain a constant generator output.

CONT

In power technology, the time required to start a system, ie to take it from rest to full power output. This time is measured in minutes for gas turbine generators and hydroelectric power systems and in hours for steam turbogenerators linked to fossil-fuelled boilers. Nuclear reactors may have even longer run-up times.
