NUCLEAR SUBMARINE [15 records]

Record 1 2024-07-25

English

Subject field(s)
  • Types of Ships and Boats
  • Nuclear Science and Technology
CONT

A nuclear-powered vessel(NPV) is a ship or submarine that is powered by a nuclear reactor. This allows NPVs to operate at sea for much longer periods than conventionally powered vessels.

CONT

Initially, the major powers continued to build diesel-electric submarines alongside nuclear vessels, but some later gave in to the expense of maintaining two categories of submarine in parallel.

Key term(s)
  • nuclear powered vessel

French

Domaine(s)
  • Types de bateaux

CONT

Record 4 2019-09-20

English

Subject field(s)
  • Submarines (Naval Forces)
  • Surveillance, Detection and Reconnaissance (Military)
  • Sonar and Underwater Detection (Military)
CONT

The nuclear submarine is a noisy submarine because her seawater cooling system continuously operates without shutdown... Noise continuously emanates from the pump and the steam can be detected by passive sonar.

CONT

Since even a noisy submarine radiates a total acoustic noise of only 0.1 watts, and quiet submarines in the range of 0.01 watts or less, it would be a trivial matter to provide a long-endurance noisemaker which could transmit a recorded submarine signature for a period of hours or days.

CONT

A Vertical Launching System (VLS) is a type of missile-firing system used aboard the submarines and surface vessels of several navies around the world.

CONT

Derived from the launch systems developed for ballistic missiles aboard SSBNs [submarine, ballistic missile, nuclear], a VLS forms a scaled-down equivalent for launching cruise missiles such as the Tomahawk, surface-to-air missiles(SAMs), and the standard missile.

DEF

A cruise missile capable of being launched from a submerged or surfaced submarine or from a surface ship.

CONT

The U. S. SLCM [sea-launched cruise missile] under development is sized for launch from standard submarine torpedo tubes... The SLCM is to be developed in both strategic and tactical variants, the former being able to carry a nuclear warhead about 1500 nm. The latter will be designed to be launched from surface ships as well as submarines, primarily as a non-nuclear anti-ship missile with a range of up to several hundred miles. The SLCM will have a low cruise altitude flight profile and will have a high accuracy. The Soviet Union currently has SLCMs of a shorter range deployed on both nuclear-and diesel-powered submarines and surface ships.
