English

Subject field(s)
  • Supply (Military)
  • CBRNE Weapons
DEF

A specified quantity of nuclear weapons, components of nuclear weapons, and warhead test equipment to be stocked in special ammunition supply points or other logistical installations. The establishment and replenishment of this stockage is a command decision and is dependent upon the tactical situation, the allocation, the capability of the logistical support unit to store and maintain the nuclear weapons, and the nuclear logistical situation. The prescribed stockage may vary from time to time and among similar logistical support units.

OBS

DEF

CONT

Once deployed, SBIRS-High will be able to detect an enemy missile just after it has been launched; track the missile as it progresses along its flight path; figure out the exact moment at which the missile deploys its nuclear, chemical, or biological warhead; and provide reliable data to defence systems(air, land, sea, or space) for their attack on the incoming warhead.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Missiles and Rockets
  • Sea Operations (Military)
DEF

A cruise missile capable of being launched from a submerged or surfaced submarine or from a surface ship.

CONT

The U. S. SLCM [sea-launched cruise missile] under development is sized for launch from standard submarine torpedo tubes... The SLCM is to be developed in both strategic and tactical variants, the former being able to carry a nuclear warhead about 1500 nm. The latter will be designed to be launched from surface ships as well as submarines, primarily as a non-nuclear anti-ship missile with a range of up to several hundred miles. The SLCM will have a low cruise altitude flight profile and will have a high accuracy. The Soviet Union currently has SLCMs of a shorter range deployed on both nuclear-and diesel-powered submarines and surface ships.

OBS

CONT

Completion of the ALCM flyoff does not end development testing of the cruise missile, each unit of which is expected to cost $1 million, including development. Program officials have already scheduled 17 additional tests for the winner of the competition, to verify more completely the chosen missile's ability to attack a target with a nuclear warhead containing twenty times the destructive force of the Hiroshima blast.
