The Laboratory, formerly the IAEA [International Atomic Energy Agency] Marine Environment Laboratory, was established in 1961 in Monaco as part of the IAEA Department of Research and Isotopes and is the only marine laboratory within the United Nations system. It responds to regular requests for technical assistance from other United Nations agencies and programmes, such as the United Nations Environment Programme, the Food and Agriculture Organization, the World Health Organization and the International Maritime Organization. Nevertheless, the promotion of nuclear and isotopic techniques and the improved understanding of marine radioactivity continue to be central to the Laboratory's work.

Abstract.... Pressurised light Water Reactor(PWR) are the most common nuclear reactors used today. It is necessary for each neutronic code to be validated for this type of reactor. The goal of this work is to create a complete calculation scheme which can be applied to the evolution of the core of a pressurised light water nuclear reactor using the lattice code DRAGON and the reactor code DONJON. Each step of this scheme will be validated by comparisons with other codes or with experimental results. The unit cell calculation will be computed for a benchmark … The assembly calculations will be used to compare the results given by DRAGON, APOLLO2 and MCNP [codes] for an assembly used by EDF [Électricité de France] for code testing. The core calculations will show that the codes DRAGON and DONJON can produce accurate macroscopic results for a real core.

Her message is clear, disarmement cannot be postponed. Archival film footage of the bombing of Hiroshima and images of its survivors seven months after the attack heighten the urgency of her message : namely, that unless we shake off our indifference and work to prevent nuclear war, we stand a slim chance of surviving the 20th century.

The advanced-passive reactor, the AP1000, is already a proven technology in the world.... Some 1, 300 man years of design and safety work has already been carried out on that type of design. In terms of fuel efficiency, the newer forms of nuclear reactor are some 10 times more economic than current counterparts-for each gigawatt of power produced, they require 30 tonnes of fuel per year, compared with 300 tonnes of the same fuel required by Magnox power stations. Those new designs are very safe and have a passive safety system, which is not reliant on electric pumps or other automated facilities as is the present case.

Ontario Power Generation(OPG) has been safely managing radioactive waste from Ontario's nuclear generating stations for over 30 years. At OPG's Western Waste Management Facility(WWMF), waste is received from the stations and is processed and stored. Approximately 140 staff work at the Western Waste Management Facility and they ensure that the public, workers and the environment are protected from the hazards associated with the radioactive wastes that are produced.... The WWMF manages the low and intermediate level waste from OPG's Pickering and Darlington nuclear stations and the Bruce Power stations.
