Photosynthesis is the chemical process where plants and some bacteria can capture and organically fix the energy of the sun.... The main product of photosynthesis is a carbohydrate, such as the sugar glucose, and oxygen which is released to the atmosphere. All of the sugar produced in the photosynthetic cells of plants and other organisms is derived from the initial chemical combining of carbon dioxide and water with sunlight. This chemical reaction is catalyzed by chlorophyll acting in concert with other pigment, lipid, sugars, protein, and nucleic acid molecules. Sugars created in photosynthesis can be later converted by the plant to starch for storage, or it can be combined with other sugar molecules to form specialized carbohydrates such as cellulose, or it can be combined with other nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur, to build complex molecules such as proteins and nucleic acids. 3, record 17, English, - photosynthesis

Bionanotechnology is the intersection of biology and nanotechnology. Bionanotechnology is a broad and somewhat vague term... which usually refers, more specifically, to the use of nanotechnological devices for applications in biotechnology. Bionanotechnology may also refer to the use of biomolecules for applications in nanotechnology. A major example of this is DNA [deoxyribonucleic acid] nanotechnology, which uses self-assembling nucleic acid structures to control matter at the nanoscale. 5, record 29, English, - nanobiotechnology

No virus has ever been causally associated with CJD [Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease]. If such a virus exists its properties are very unusual. It must be ubiquitous but normally non pathogenic. PrP [prion protein] would be essential for its infectivity e. g. perhaps serving as a receptor. Prion strains exist(more than 20 strains have been identified in mice infected with scrapie prions and several strains from humans). These strains breed true in inbred mice and differ in their incubation times and lesion profiles. This observation and the reluctance to accept because of precedence the existence of a replicating agent lacking a nucleic acid genome has led to the virino hypothesis. It proposes that a small nucleic acid in association eith PrP is the infectious agent. It is not fully consistent with all of the data and no such nucleic acid sequence has ever been detected. 1, record 43, English, - virino

Nucleic acid testing, called NAT by blood banks, promises to close that gap. It could virtually eliminate the few cases of HIV that taint blood every year, said Dr. Celso Bianco of the New York Blood Center. And experts predict it will prevent an estimated 84 annual cases of hepatitis C transmission through blood, the vast majority. The government hasn’t mandated NAT-tested blood yet because technically it's still experimental. Genetic fingerprinting is commonplace in laboratories, where it's called PCR, for polymerase chain reaction testing. But how to test the entire blood supply raises questions, and blood banks are using different strategies to implement the new technology. 3, record 48, English, - nucleic%20acid%20testing

Electrophoretic separation of allelic variants of enzymes(allozymes) has been used to study the population genetics of a wide variety of species for many years. Although electrophoretically-evident variation is only a small portion of the genetic variation of a gene, many enzymes have been shown to exhibit high levels of allozymic variation. More recently, genetic variation at the molecular level [i. e., structural traits of nucleic acids such as DNA(deoxyribonucleic acid) ] has been used in population genetic studies. A variety of technical approaches have been used to assay molecular variation for population genetic studies. 2, record 58, English, - genetic%20variation

3, record 58, French, - variation%20g%C3%A9n%C3%A9tique

A computer program, which runs on MS-DOS personal computers, is described that assists in the design of synthetic genes coding for proteins. The goal of the program is the design of a gene which(i) contains as many unique restriction sites as possible and(ii) uses a specific codon usage. The gene designed according to the criteria above is(i) suitable for ’modular mutagenesis’ experiments and(ii) optimized for expression. The program ’reverse-translates’ protein sequences into degenerated DNA sequences, generates a map of potential restriction sites and locates sequence positions where unique restriction sites can be accommodated. The nucleic acid sequence is then ’refined’ according to a specific codon usage to remove any degeneration. Unique restriction sites, if potentially present, can be ’forced’ into the degenerated nucleic acid sequence by using ’priority codes’ assigned to different restriction sequences. 1, record 64, English, - synthetic%20gene
