DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Genetics
CONT

Resistance to RNA viruses in plants has been obtained for many positive-strand RNA viruses. The first case of resistance to a negative strand RNA virus is reported by J. J. L. Gielen et al., "Engineered resistance to tomato spotted wilt virus, a negative-strand RNA virus", Biotechnology 9 : 1363-7. They used insertion of a gene for the viral nucleocapsid protein, an internal RNA binding protein.

DEF

a virus whose genetic information consists of a single strand of RNA that is the negative or antisense strand which does not encode mRNA (messenger RNA).

French

Domaine(s)
  • Génétique
CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Microbiology and Parasitology
  • Plant Biology
  • Plant Diseases
DEF

Plant viruses of the reovirus and rhabdovirus groups which have an outer lipid-protein membrane surrounding the protein shell of the virus.

OBS

Some enveloped viruses appear to associate with coated pits in the plasma membrane, to be taken into coated vesicles by endocytosis and then translocated via large, uncoated vesicles into lysosomes. Fusion of viral envelope with lysosomal membrane then releases the nucleocapsid directly into the cytoplasm without exposure of the content of it to the lysosome.

DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Viral Diseases
  • Respiratory Tract
DEF

A variety of influenza caused by influenza virus B.

CONT

On the basis of their nucleocapsid and M [matrix] protein antigens, the influenza viruses are divided into 3 distinct immunological types(A, B, and C). Influenza A viruses also occur in pigs, birds, and horses. However, only man is infected by influenza B and C.... Influenza B viruses do not occur in animals and do not exhibit antigenic shift.

Key term(s)
  • B type influenza
  • B type flu

French

Domaine(s)
  • Maladies virales
  • Voies respiratoires
CONT

A virus in the family Iridoviridae

OBS

Iridoviridae : a family of large DNA viruses that are 180 nm in diameter, enveloped with an icosahedral nucleocapsid and contain a large, single, double-stranded DNA genome of 150 kilobases. They replicate in the cytoplasm of infected cells. Most infect larvae of insects giving them an iridescent appearance. The one of veterinary importance in the family is the virus of African swine fever.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Maladies des animaux
OBS

OBS

Herpesviridae : a family of viruses, the members of which are about 150 nm in diameter, enveloped, with a nucleocapsid of about 100 nm in diameter, composed of 162 capsomers and contain a large, double-stranded DNA. The viruses replicate in the nucleus of the infected cell, where they induce the formation of a characteristic inclusion body; some also induce formation of a cytoplasmic inclusion body.
