Prolapse of the nucleus pulposus into the vertebral body. Schmorl' s nodes are seen in disease processes that weaken or disrupt the endplate or subchondral bone, including intervertebral osteochondrosis, Scheuermann's disease, trauma, infection, metabolic and endocrine disorders, and neoplasm.

[A] common disorder is degeneration of the nucleus pulposus. With age, the nucleus tends to become more and more dehydrated, and gradually begins to degenerate. As this happens, the intervertebral disc height begins to decrease. When this happens, the altered pattern of stresses may lead to marginal osteophytosis adjacent to the affected endplates. 1, record 4, English, - marginal%20osteophytosis

The appearance of a radiolucent stripe in an intervertebral disk, [which is] a manifestation of disk degeneration. 1, record 5, English, - vacuum%20disk%20phenomenon
Record number: 5, Textual support number: 1 CONT
The vacuum disc phenomenon was... described as the presence of "air" in the intervertebral soft tissues of the spine. It is related to advanced arthrosis of the intervertebral disc. In the early stages of disc degeneration, the nucleus pulposus begins to desiccate, which results in fissuring of the fibrocartilage. These fissures can develop into spaces or clefts that fill with gas from the surrounding tissues. Gas obtained by aspiration directly from a vacuum disc was found to consist of 92 per cent nitrogen. 2, record 5, English, - vacuum%20disk%20phenomenon
Record number: 5, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The term "vacuum disk phenomenon" is a misnomer since there is gas present. 1, record 5, English, - vacuum%20disk%20phenomenon

1, record 5, French, - ph%C3%A9nom%C3%A8ne%20du%20gaz%20intra%2Ddiscal
