The [nuclear] core codes can include evolution modules to update the composition of the fuel during the burn up. These codes solve the nuclide evolution equations … They can contain also special modules to furnish information for the definition of interpolation parameters … The multi-parameter tables are prepared by the cell codes but we need information on the power production and on the medium properties to effectuate the interpolation and to apply the cross-sections computed in cell codes. Sometimes, some codes which simulate simplified thermal hydraulic calculation are employed to feed information back to the interpolation algorithms. 1, record 4, English, - multi%2Dparameter%20table

1, record 4, French, - table%20multiparam%C3%A9tr%C3%A9e

At the nuclear level, binding energy is also equal to the energy liberated when a nucleus is created from other nucleons or nuclei. This nuclear binding energy(binding energy of nucleons into a nuclide) is derived from the nuclear force(residual strong interaction) and is the energy required to disassemble a nucleus into the same number of free, unbound neutrons and protons it is composed of, so that the nucleons are far/distant enough from each other [and] the nuclear force can no longer cause the particles to interact. 4, record 5, English, - nuclear%20binding%20energy

Instrumental neutron activation analysis(INAA) is used to determine the concentration of trace and major elements in a variety of matrices. A sample is subjected to a neutron flux and radioactive nuclides are produced. As these radioactive nuclides decay, they emit gamma rays whose energies are characteristic for each nuclide. Comparison of the intensity of these gamma rays with those emitted by a standard permit a quantitative measure of the concentrations of the various nuclides. 2, record 8, English, - instrumental%20neutron%20activation%20analysis

The simplest form of engineered trench, or shallow land burial, relies mainly on the properties of the excavated overburden and the geohydrologic properties of the site for containment. The intent is to ensure that the travel time of radionuclides from the waste to the human environment via groundwater is long compared to the nuclide half lives. Travel time is long because of low hydraulic gradients, soils of low water permeability and high contaminant adsorption, and lengthy pathways across exclusion zones. 4, record 24, English, - trench
Record number: 24, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Illustration of a shallow land burial facility (engineered trench). ... Figure 9 outlines the engineered trench option. In this option, the major characteristics are that: . wastes are placed below grade (in suitable hydrogeological conditions) in trenches having a specially prepared bottom that incorporates a drainage system; . there is an earthen cover over the wastes that easily can incorporate additional engineered barriers; . structural stability is not provided by the disposal facility; and . for structural stability, voids between the waste containers are filled with sans or earthen materials - bulk wastes may be compacted. 5, record 24, English, - trench
Record number: 24, Textual support number: 3 CONT
Shallow-land burial in trenches was the original low-level waste disposal practice at the beginning of the nuclear era. The method originally consisted in emplacing the wastes in trenches dug into the ground at depths ranging from 3 to 6 m and covering the emplaced wastes with about 1 m of soil. 1, record 24, English, - trench
Record number: 24, Textual support number: 4 CONT
Burial trenches without additional engineered barriers can be used provided that radionuclides will migrate into groundwater beneath the site at an acceptable rate. 1, record 24, English, - trench
Record number: 24, Textual support number: 1 OBS
As used in this context, the word "engineered" refers to the fact that features and materials have been designed or selected to accomplish certain functions. In shallow land burial the materials are usually natural rather than man-made. 4, record 24, English, - trench

According to Webster’s Dictionary, "fissile" is a synonym for "fissionable". According to Oxford English Dictionary, "fissile" means "capable of undergoing nuclear fission" (and hence has the same meaning as "fissionable", which then would be a generic term), but it is "sometimes used specifically of materials capable of fission upon absorption of a slow (as opposed to a fast) neutron". According to the Canadian Committee for the Standardization of Nuclear Terminology, which has officialized the term "fissile", the two terms "fissile" and "fissionable" should not be used interchangeably. 3, record 49, English, - fissile

There are two forms of injection into deep geologic formations that have been suggested or used for LLW disposal: hydrofracture and deep well injection. Both methods are primarily useful only for liquid or finely ground wastes. They both take precautions to prevent contaminating useful aquifers by carefully selecting the geologic formations into which the waste is injected. Hydrofracture disposal also uses a very insoluble waste form. Generally, hydrofracture involves injection of a mixture of waste and liquid grouting materials under high pressure into a deep layered rock formation such as shale. The injected material causes layers of rock to separate and the material forms flat "sheets" extending out from the injection well. The grout causes some surface uplift near the injection well. 1, record 72, English, - hydrofracture%20disposal
Record number: 72, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Because of difficulty in transporting liquid wastes safely, the hydrofracture facility must be located near the source of the waste. A hydrofracture site requires large, generally impermeable(to nearby aquifers) layered formations that fracture horizontally. The surface area needed and visual impact of a hydrofracture facility are relatively small. Major barriers to nuclide release are the grout(waste form) and the geologic formation used. Perhaps the greatest problem with hydraulic injection is that there is little control of fracture propagation and it is not possible to define the final geometry of the grout/waste sheets from the surface. 2, record 72, English, - hydrofracture%20disposal

1, record 74, English, - contaminant%20adsorption
