Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Crazy Ivan is a U. S. Navy term for a Soviet submarine manoeuvre, characterized by any number of sudden and sharp turns, used by submarine crews to "look behind" them. Because of the acoustic distortions and noise caused by propeller blades, it is nearly possible for conventional sonars to detect objects directly behind a submarine. Thus, with sudden turns, the area where the sonar is not effective shifts relative to the current heading of the submarine, causing previous gaps in sonar coverage to be revealed while masking known areas. 1, record 1, English, - crazy%20Ivan
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The "crazy" part of the name comes from the fact that these manoeuvre were very sudden and "Ivan" was a common nickname used to refer to the Russians. A standard tactic of pursuing submarines would be to closely follow the Soviet submarine hidden right in the sonar gap, causing the U.S. submarine to go undetected. 1, record 1, English, - crazy%20Ivan

A microchip for your pet can mean the difference between lost and found. Although tags and collars are important, they can tear or slip off. With microchipping, a veterinarian injects a tiny computer chip—about the size of a grain of rice—just under your pet's skin, between the shoulder blades. The microchip number is entered into an international database, which can be read by a microchip scanner if your pet is lost and picked up by a veterinary hospital or humane society. 1, record 2, English, - microchipping

Airfoil blade fans... are the most efficient of all centrifugal fans. These fans are most applicable to large systems where the energy saving owing to their high efficiency offsets their relatively high cost. The blades, which usually number ten to sixteen on the impeller, are contoured to react like an airplane wing. Airfoil fans produce extremely smooth flows and, for a given use, are the highest speed centrifugal fans. These fans have stable operation and low noise level over their full range. Airfoil blades are expensive to produce and repair, limiting their use to clean, nonabrasive gases. The construction of the scroll, the close internal clearances, and the precise alignment of the impeller and inlet bell are features which aid in attaining the high efficiencies of these fans. 3, record 8, English, - airfoil%20fan

The least desirable flow condition is one that causes spin or swirl to develop in the airstream at the fan inlet. Spin in the rotational direction of the impeller reduces the fan output and efficiency. Figure 13 illustrates the use of turning vanes to correct inlet prerotating swirl at a centrifugal fan. 6, record 18, English, - turning%20vanes
Record number: 18, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Inlet swirl, or vorticity, is a frequent cause of reduction in fan performance. If the spin is imparted in the direction of wheel rotation, a situation corresponding to the use of inlet vanes arises: the fan volume, pressure, and horsepower are lower than expected. If the air spin is counter to wheel rotation, the volume and static pressure will be greater than expected and the brake horsepower will also be greater. In either case, spin always reduces efficiency. These conditions are readily overcome by installing vanes and a splitter at the fan inlet... 3, record 18, English, - turning%20vanes

Backward curved and backward inclined blade fans. Backward curved and backward inclined blades are slightly less efficient, cost less, and generate slightly more noise than the airfoil type. The number of blades is usually ten to sixteen and the fan scroll is the same as for airfoil fans. Backward curved blades... are constant thickness airfoil blades and are preferred over straight backward inclined blades... because they allow smoother air flow and are stronger. Backward curved blade fans will operate over the full range of air flow from wide open to shut off, whereas backward inclined blade fans are unstable under flow condition below the design point. These fans are used in industrial applications in which fouling of the blades by airborne contaminants would minimize the efficiency advantage of airfoil blade fans. 2, record 19, English, - backward%20inclined%20fan

2, record 19, French, - ventilateur%20%C3%A0%20r%C3%A9action
