A historic military complex named in honour of John Butler and his Butler’s Rangers, Loyalist soldiers who had founded the town of Niagara towards the end of the American Revolution. This complex was associated with 19th- and 20th-century military barracking and troop training. It was built by the British after the War of 1812, and was occupied as a military camp until the 1960s.

The Justice Annex is a building just north of the Supreme Court of Canada and west of Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Canada. Built in 1940 it is the last surviving representative of many similar temporary buildings erected during the Second World War to house the rapidly growing number of government employees. This building was built to house Royal Canadian Mounted Police(RCMP) officers. It later became the headquarters of C. D. Howe's Department of Munitions and Supply. After the war it was given to the Justice Department and named the Justice Annex.

The Hydro/AECL design team met this challenge by introducing a highly innovative containment concept-what was to become known as the negative pressure containment system. Central to the system is a large reinforced concrete building operated at a high level of vacuum(hence, the name "vacuum building"). This building is linked to the individual reactor buildings via a duct system and a number of parallel isolating valves. These valves are normally closed, permitting the reactor buildings to operate at normal atmospheric pressure. Should an accident arise, leading to a pressure rise in a reactor building, this pressure rise will actuate the isolating valves, thereby opening a flow path from the reactor building to the vacuum building. As a result, the pressure in the reactor building is quickly reduced to below atmospheric pressure, thereby positively preventing the escape to the environment of any radioactivity released inside the reactor building as a result of the accident.

On June 15, Kingstonians will gather together with family and friends in their city to celebrate First Capital Day. On that day in Kingston in 1841, Governor General Lord Sydenham opened the first Parliament of the United Provinces of Canada. Evantually, Kingston's insufficient number of office buildings forced Parliament to move to Montreal, where it opened on November 28, 1844. Over 160 years later, both the provincial and the federal governments have officially recognized Kingston as the First Capital of Canada. Thanks to the hard work of Mr. Ian Milne and Dr. Margaret Angus, the founders of First Capital Day, the occasion of Kingston's choice as Canada's first capital has been marked with much celebration for the past five years.

A nondescript building within the Aum [sect] complex at Mt. Fuji housed one of the most sophisticated chemicals manufacturing facilities in the world. The building, known as Satian 7, had cost $10 million. The name "Satian" was derived from the ancient Sanskrit word for truth. This particular building had only one purpose : to produce one of the most deadly nerve toxins in the world-sarin gas.

Historic Structures: Cleaning Historic Masonry ... Use clean potable water free from contaminants. Appearance of iron and copper stains, possibly in regions in which local water supply has relatively high metal content, is more easily avoided with introduction of complexing agents into water. Stones with high metal content are susceptile to development of Liesegang rings which can accelerate decay of corners and edges. Some municipal water is highly chlorinated; if used on limestone, it can make it more soluble or cause corrosion of metal ties.

Technology of Humid Walls Drying with Crystalline Injection Technology. The Palace complex in Lowicz near Warsaw is on top of a long list of over 2550 buildings structures in that number over 100 in Cracow thus far treated in Poland by the crystalline injection technique. The work of dampness removal in these 18th century historical buildings was carried out in july 1987... The crystalline injection technique developed by Wojciech Nawrot is covered by patent... Crystallisation of the substance injected occurs by the effect referred to in the specialist literature as the periodic precipitation process or ageing sol. During this specific crystallisation self-organisation of crystals takes place. The effect is also thermodynamically explained. The structure thus formed resembles some narrow rings which may be encountered in nature in geological systems(known as the Liesegang rings).

Paternoster lifts are sometimes used in busy buildings where there is a large movement of persons between floors. These consist of a number of lift cars carrying two people which move continually upwards and then down attached to an endless chain. The cars move at about 60 ft per min., and the passengers step on to the moving floor, there being no door. The space between the cars is filled in by hinged doors which move if an obstruction is met.

Airtight construction. Any house has a large number of potential air leakage points... These leakage points let cold outside air in, and warm inside air out. As a result, in a conventional house, it is not uncommon for the heated indoor air to be completely changed every half hour. A major potential problem associated with this air change [is] condensation in the building's structure... There is in addition, a second problem : such air change typically accounts for 25-30 per cent of the total house heat loss... The use of an air-vapour barrier is an attempt to prevent these problems by stopping virtually all air leakage.
