For a multi-pore membrane with high pore density, a large number of nanochannels are involved in energy conversion, and the total power generation is much greater than that of a single nanochannel. However, the interaction between the pores causes intense concentration polarization, which significantly reduces the driving force of ion transport. As a result, the output power density of the multi-pore membrane is only a few watts per square meter. 2, record 1, English, - output%20power%20density

SMBG works by having patients perform a number of glucose tests each day or each week. The test most commonly involves pricking a finger with a lancet device to obtain a small blood sample, applying a drop of blood onto a reagent strip, and determining the glucose concentration by inserting the strip into a reflectance photometer for an automated reading. Test results are then recorded in a logbook or stored in the glucose meter's electronic memory. People with diabetes can be taught to use their SMBG results to correct any deviations out of a desired target range by changing their carbohydrate intake, exercising, or using more or less insulin. 2, record 4, English, - self%2Dmonitoring%20of%20blood%20glucose

The discovery that bacteria are able to communicate with each other changed our general perception of many single, simple organisms inhabiting our world. Instead of language, bacteria use signalling molecules which are released into the environment. As well as releasing the signalling molecules, bacteria are also able to measure the number(concentration) of the molecules within a population. Nowadays we use the term ’Quorum Sensing’(QS) to describe the phenomenon whereby the accumulation of signalling molecules enable a single cell to sense the number of bacteria(cell density). In the natural environment, there are many different bacteria living together which use various classes of signalling molecules. As they employ different languages they cannot necessarily talk to all other bacteria. 2, record 10, English, - quorum%20sensing

A constant of great practical importance since it is equal to the substrate concentration required to reach half the maximum velocity. This constant of a substrate is therefore, a measure of the affinity of the enzyme for that substrate : the lower the constant, the higher the affinity. The constant possesses the unit gram molecule per liter(M) and it is independent of enzyme concentration. Kinetically, it is related to a number of rate constants. Values are usually in the range of 10-[supercript2] M to 10[ Supercript 6) M. 3, record 14, English, - Km

1, record 21, French, - stabilisation%20des%20%C3%A9missions%20de%20gaz%20carbonique

In some systems the membrane may be moulded round a plastic rod which is grooved to produce a thin channel effect; it has been suggested that this is more efficient in reducing concentration polarization than a hollow membrane tube. ... Calcium and Magnesium react with other chemicals in the water. The warm water acts as a catalyst and increases the number of reactions depending on the concentration of calcium and magnesium. The reaction which takes place is the dissociation of calcium hydrocarbonate, formula : Ca(HC03) and magnesium hydrocarbonate, formula : Mg(HC0[ susbcript 3]) 2. Both of these are soluble solids, which means they can dissolve when put in water. When these two soluble salts dissociate, they form carbon dioxide(a gas), which is released from the water, and calcium and magnesium carbonate. These two compounds are not soluble and are therefore taken out of solution. A rate law is an algebraic expression giving the flux through a process in terms of the molecular abundances or concentrations of the molecules involved and perhaps including a number of other physical forces. Perhaps the most famous rate law in biology is the Henri-Michaelis-Menten rate law... Ohm's law is a more widely encountered example... Other famous linear rate laws are bulk flow, and diffusion. These and many others can be seen as special cases of the general principle that fluxes are driven by gradients in chemical potential. The simplest rate law of all is the linear, first order rate law kS which embodies the physical-chemical principle of mass action. Here k is the rate constant, and S is the concentration of the molecule that is moved or transformed by this process. 3, record 34, English, - rate%20law

Developing Hormosira banksii embryos, used as bioassays in toxicity studies, identified ammonium as a toxicant in secondary treated sewage effluent discharged at Boags Rocks, Victoria, Australia. Ammonium did not affect fertilization but had a significant effect on germination at 48 h and cell division at 72 h with most damage occurring in the first 48 h. Ammonium showed a similar effect as whole effluent (when expressed as mg N l-1 ammonium), sampled in June, September and November 1997, on developing H. banksii embryos. This similarity is further confirmed with comparable EC50 (concentration causing an effect on 50% of the population tested) and LOEC (lowest observable effect concentration) values. 4, record 35, French, - concentration%20effective

Although several methods can be used to estimate the effects of mass transfer to the immobilized enzyme carrier surface from the bulk liquid, the conditions encountered are not typical of those frequently encountered in other applications. Laminar liquid flow with a low-Reynolds number falling outside the range of many mass transfer correlations is normal for immobilized enzyme systems. The rate of mass transfer from the bulk solution to a surface can be written as... where km is the mass transfer coefficient(with units of cm/s), am is the surface area per unit volume(cm[ superscript-1]), Sb is the bulk phase substrate concentration, and Ss is the substrate concentration at the surface. Because the hot and cold towers of a stage are in series, the two liquid to gas flow ratios (L/G) are thus directly related and an L/G change in one tower causes an L/G change of the same direction in the other tower. Because the towers can be regarded as absorbers and strippers, and L/G increase favors deuterium enrichment in the hot tower and an L/G decrease favors deuterium enrichment in the cold tower. 1, record 44, English, - deuterium%20enrichment

Because of the way that enzymes work, there is a limit to the amount of a substrate that a single enzyme can process in a given time. If the concentration of substrate is increased, the rate at which product is formed also increases up to a maximum value. At that point the enzyme molecule is saturated with substrate, and the rate of reaction depends only on how rapidly the substrate molecule can be processed. This rate is expressed as a turnover number, which for many enzymes is in the range of 1000 substrate molecules per second. 1, record 56, English, - saturate

There are also a large number of optical particle counters... which purport to give size distributions and number concentration for aerosols. To a varying degree they do the job intended, however, problems arise when the particles are highly light absorbing or irregularly shaped. Sensitivities of these units are good for particulate plume studies but not particularly sensitive for background aerosol studies. 1, record 59, English, - optical%20particle%20counter

In most metallic [solar collector] systems, especially those using a number of metals or a reactive metal such as aluminum, the heat transfer fluid can have a significant impact on corrosion. In aqueous solutions, the concentration of dissolved chemicals, heavy metal ions, and pH of the fluid must be controlled. Deionized or demineralized water has been used successfully but additional steps are usually taken. These include the use of a gettering column to trap heavy metal ions before they enter critical parts of the system and inhibitors which stabilize the metal ions and reduce their reaction with less noble metals. 1, record 61, English, - gettering%20column

Fluidized-bed technique. The fluidized-bed technique [for mineral concentration] has been adopted in a number of processes to increase the economic recovery of metals from ores and concentrates. In this process, the material to be treated is kept in motion in a chamber by an upward current of gas that maintains the individual particles in suspension. Through precise adjustment of the velocity of the gas to conform with the grain size and specific gravity of the materials to be treated, a floating mixture of gas and solids is generated that behaves almost like a liquid. Increasing attention has been given to studies of high-temperature reactions in fluidized-bed systems, "high-temperature" implying(...) the practical limit of fuel-combustion heating. 1, record 63, English, - fluidized%2Dbed%20technique

The hydrogen-ion concentration and the hydrogen-ion activity of most solutions is a small number that can be expressed in exponential form. In order to eliminate the use of exponential numbers in expressing hydrogen-ion concentration, S. P. L. Sorensen in 1909 introduced the concept of pH.... This table brings out certain characteristics of the pH unit. 2, record 67, French, - circuit%20de%20flottation
