Mandelbrot, créateur du terme en 1975, le concept n'a pas encore de définition mathématique généralement acceptée. Le terme est dérivé du latin «fractus» qui signifie «fragmenté», «irrégulier». Integral transport methods. The integral transport methods construct an expression for the angular flux at a given location by integrating over all external and scattering sources that could contribute, taking in account the probability of the source neutral reaching the given location without a collision. The collision probability method result from partitioning the domain of the problem into a large number of finite size regions and formulating the equation to calculate the average value of the neutral flux in each region. Like the Monte Carlo method, the result of collision probability method can be very accurate. This method has been successfully implemented for neutral propagating in 3D rectangular grids. Since the collision probability method is based on a global particle balance, the neutral flux at a given region is coupled to the neutral scalar flux of any other regions via collision probabilities which must be calculated by multi-dimensional numerical integration involving expensive evaluation of Bickley functions. 3, record 5, English, - collision%20probability%20method

In the March 28, 1997 issue of Science, Li et al describe a protein which is mutated in a number of human cancers, including those from breast, brain and prostate. This protein interacts with actin filaments and is a putative protein tyrosine phosphatase. Li et al have called this protein PTEN(phosphatase and tensin homolog deleted on chromosome 10). Steck et al, who simulatenously located the same gene have adopted the name, MMAC1(mutated in multiple advance cancers 1). The 5. 5-kb mRNA of the PTEN/MMAC1 is widely expressed in human tissues and it appears to have alternately spliced variants. The N-terminal domain of the gene codes for a 403-amino acid protein that is likely a protein phosphatase and is related to the CDC14 which is an enzyme that controls the cell division. 1, record 12, English, - PTEN%2FMMC1

The true random search procedure divides the domain of definition into some finite number of multidimensional cells, say 1000, where the size of the cells and the number tested satisfy the required precision. Next, assume that one of the best 100 cells will satisfy our specifications. Then, if we choose one cell at random, the probability that it is one of the 100 beast is 0. 1 and the probability that it is not is 0. 9. 1, record 14, English, - true%20random%20search

An important concept for the design of diagnostic tests is that of a primitive subskill. This concept is also critical for curriculum construction, especially if the process is automated as in BIP. For a given domain the exact set of these subskills can be extremely difficult to define. Equipped with the tools of the BUGGY model, Burton(1982) suggests that a partition of the theory of bugs be used to define a primitive subskill as "any isolatable part of the skill that it is possible to mislearn"(p. 177). More formally, the set of all observable bugs is partitioned under the equivalence relation of giving wrong answers on the same problems, considering all possible problems. Then a primitive subskill is an equivalence class in this partition; in other words, it is a part of the skill that corresponds to bugs manifesting in exactly the same problems. In practice, one need only consider a finite number of problems. 1, record 15, English, - primitive%20subskill

The foundation for the experimentation process is a database of assertions which O’Shea calls a "theory of instruction" for the domain. Each assertion in the database indicates the expected results of a specific experimental modification performed on the production rules. Results are expressed in terms of possible or definite effects on teaching performance with respect to one goal. For instance, an assertion could say that spending more resources on selecting appropriate problems might improve the performance of students on the post-test. Thus these assertions represent a corpus of possibly useful experiments. After choosing one of the four goals, the system selects all the assertions that propose modifications leading to a possible improvement with respect to that goal; then it executes the changes these assertions suggest. Statistical tests evaluate the variations in performance caused by the modifications, with respect to each of the four goals. The overall improvement of the system is then computed as a linear function of the goals’ respective variations. If a significant improvement is achieved, the modifications are adopted. In addition, as a form of learning involving some serendipity, new assertions are added to the original database to record the effects of the experiment on the different goals. In this way, not only does the system improve, but its ability to set up experiments is also extended. Obviously, it must have had a minimal number of assertions to start with. Figure 6. 6. gives an overview of the flow of information through the self-improving component. 1, record 16, English, - theory%20of%20instruction

The number of search computations with respect to an exhaustive search can be reduced for unimodal functions by using the dichotomous search procedure. The first step here is to evaluate two points separated by some interval(delta) in the domain of definition. The half of the domain in which the maximum or minimum lies can now be determined, and two new points can be placed in the center of this interval and so forth until the value of the interval approaches(eta). The value of(eta) clearly established the precision of(the) estimate.... 1, record 17, English, - dichotomous%20search%20procedure
