The importance of oceans and the life within them is often understated. Oceans make up 71% of the Earth's surface, and produce 50-80% of the oxygen in the atmosphere... A majority of this oxygen is produced by microscopic free-floating plants, also known as phytoplankton, which account for the majority of bottom trophic level production in most marine ecosystems. A large number of marine food webs are under "bottom-up" control, in which the quantity of primary production controls the abundance of individuals within trophic levels and their biomass. The Arctic marine ecosystem is thought to be under bottom-up control, where primary production is largely limited by advective nutrient supply from adjacent oceans... 2, record 7, English, - lower%20trophic%20level%20production

A quantum dot, also called a "qdot" or a "nanodot, "is a semiconductor nanocrystal that is less or equal to 10 nm in size, and confines the motion of conduction band electrons in the three spatial directions. So, by definition, quantum dots are able to trap electrons. A given quantum dot contains a finite number of conduction band electrons typically in the range of 1 to 100. 6, record 8, Spanish, - punto%20cu%C3%A1ntico

The main defining characteristics of small-scale fishers are their individual capital commitments and levels of production, which are relatively small scale. Such people have often been referred to in the fisheries management and development literature as "artisanal" fishers, but in many cases that is not an accurate term. Hence, while it is often apropos for describing fishers who fabricate much of their own gear, it is inappropriate for describing the far larger number of fishers who use small motorized watercraft and fishing gear which is manufactured outside their local communities. 1, record 9, English, - small%2Dscale%20fisher

Radiometric resolution, or radiometric sensitivity refers to the number of digital levels used to express the data collected by the sensor. In general, the greater the number of levels, the greater the detail of information. The number of levels is normally expressed as the number of binary digits needed to store the value of the maximum level, for example a radiometric resolution of 1 bit would be 2 levels, 2 bits would be 4 levels and 8 bits would be 256 levels. A multi-level distributorship occurs when a person involved in a sale or distribution is expected to solicit others to sell or distribute, forming multi-levels of distribution. Included in these levels is the promise that the initial person receives not only a percentage or commission for goods sold but also a certain rebate or commission based on the number of persons signed up, forming a sales pyramid. These schemes create the false impression that one can get rich merely by signing up a number of people in the program who will then in turn have an incentive to sign up a number of people below each of them, without ever really having to sell any products. These schemes almost always fail, and you run the risk that you are participating in an illegal scheme. 1, record 32, English, - sales%20pyramid

2, record 35, French, - nombre%20quantique%20magn%C3%A9tique

Dimensionless number which like its reciprocal, the Bodenstein number, characterises the degree of dispersion, being zero for plug-flow and infinity for perfect mixing. It may be calculated experimentally from tracer studies. As real reactors inevitably exhibit a certain degree of back-mixing (dispersion), it is important to determine both its extent and its effect upon reactor performance. 2, record 37, English, - dispersion%20number
Record number: 37, Textual support number: 1 CONT
The smaller the dispersion number, the less severe the backmixing. It is apparent that increasing linear velocity or bed depth will decrease the dispersion number and thus the backmixing. At higher conversion levels, the effect of backmixing on reactor performance is more severe than at lower conversions. 1, record 37, French, - crit%C3%A8re%20de%20Peclet

The Canadian Aboriginal Science and Engineering Association is a private, non-profit organization, which seeks to significantly increase the number of Aboriginal scientists and engineers in the nation and to develop technologically informed leasers within the Aboriginal community. CASEA's ultimate goal is to be catalyst for the advancement of Aboriginal peoples as they seek to become self-reliant and self-determined members of society. CESEA in partnership with the American Indian Science and Engineering Society begins working as early as elementary school through the development of science and math camps, teacher training and mentor ship programs to strengthen Aboriginal students’ educational background in math and science, and to prepare them for the academic pressures of post-secondary school life. At the college and university levels, scholarships will be developed and sought from corporate sponsors. Recruiting opportunities to further prepare Aboriginal students for successful science and engineering careers will be available through the CASEA contact network. Each CASEA student is asked to give back to the Aboriginal community after graduation; thus CASEA students become more than professionals in the technology field, they become architects of a new destiny for Aboriginal peoples. 3, record 39, English, - Canadian%20Aboriginal%20Science%20and%20Engineering%20Association

National Immunization Coverage Surveys(NICS) are implemented every 2 years by Immunization and Respiratory Infections Division(IRID) of the Public Health Agency of Canada(PHAC) in order to assess national coverage rates for routine childhood immunizations and for select adult immunizations during alternating years. Questions on knowledge, attitudes and beliefs(KAB) towards immunization were added to the Surveys from 1998 onwards. The purpose of these surveys is to monitor immunization coverage levels over a number of years; to assess up-to-date and on-time immunization coverage levels; to evaluate changes in KAB; and to monitor progress towards national immunization coverage goals. 1, record 48, English, - National%20Immunization%20Coverage%20Survey

1, record 48, French, - Enqu%C3%AAte%20nationale%20sur%20la%20vaccination

Paste backfill is defined as an engineered mixture of fine solid particles (with binder) and water, containing between 72% and 85% solids by weight. Particles in a paste mixture will not settle out of the mixture if allowed to remain stationary in a tank or in a pipeline. It can be placed in stopes with or without binder addition depending on the strength requirements for backfill. Improved pumping technology, environmental concerns and the need for a low cost/high strength fill in mines are driving mine operators to consider paste backfill as a tailings management and mine backfill alternative. The main advantages and disadvantages of a paste backfill system over a conventional hydraulic backfill plant are generally accepted as: ... higher strengths can be achieved with an equivalent cement content; drainage of water and slimes from the fill are minimized, reducing the need for bulkhead construction and extensive drainage works. This feature also reduces maintenance on sumps and mine de-watering pumps; in some cases, unclassified tailings can be used to make paste rather than just the coarse fraction as is the case for hydraulic backfill; shorter stope cycle times can be achieved because an equivalent strength can be achieved in a shorter time with paste backfill; paste backfill systems achieve lower porosities than conventional fill thereby increasing the tonnage of material that can be disposed of underground; and, since paste backfill is deposited as a non-segregated mass of backfill (because cement particles are not displaced by the internal movements of the draining water), more predictable strength properties for the fill can be achieved. 2, record 52, English, - paste%20backfilling%20system

Paste backfilling of mines. A number of mines are installing paste fill systems to replace the current sand fill method. The justification and economies of this conversion include : higher production levels(less wait for dewatering), increased grade of ore to the mill, decrease of stope ore left as pillars, improved haulage with the removal of excess moisture, increased filling rates, and a higher strength fill with less waiting time. The unique problems associated with paste fill applications range from extremely rapid system wear to paste separation and system blockage. 3, record 52, English, - paste%20backfilling%20system

Remblayage. 2, record 52, French, - syst%C3%A8me%20de%20remblayage%20par%20p%C3%A2te

The first ionospheric layer found was the so called E layer or region at about 110 km altitude. It is used by radio operators as a surface from which signals can be reflected to distant stations. It is interesting to note that this works also the other way round and, for example, the auroral kilometric radiation created by the precipitating particles high above the ionosphere does not reach the ground because of the ionospheric E layer. Above the E layer, a F layer consisting of two parts can be found: F1 is at about 170 km, and F2 at about 250 km altitude. Also F layer reflects radio waves. The lowermost region of the ionosphere below 80 km altitude, D layer, however, principally absorbs radio waves. 2, record 59, English, - ionospheric%20layer

The Review of Veterans’ Care Needs is an important policy and research body, established in 1996, that supports the Department's efforts to design programs and services that are driven by client need rather than program requirements, improving our ability to make evidence-based decisions. Through a series of research tools, including a literature review, focus groups with clients, their care givers and a number of health providers, and analysis of health services offered by the community and other levels of government in each province, our Review of Veterans’ Care Needs project team has been able to identify changes in the needs of aging veterans, gaps in benefits and services and VAC can best add value to their care. 1, record 60, English, - Review%20of%20Veterans%27%20Care%20Needs

X-ray welding of metal-matrix composites.... X-rays with energies in the range 3-200 keV have penetration lengths on the order of 0. 001-50 mm for various materials. Therefore, they have the potential for use as a volumetric heating source, provided a sufficiently intense source of x-rays is available. Until recently this was not possible. However, with the advent of third-generation synchrotron radiation sources, tunable x-rays with power densities greater than 104 W/cm2 in a 1-2 mm spot can be produced with the use of insertion devices. At such high power levels, localized melting and even vaporization can be induced in a number of materials. If these x-ray beams can be utilized in a controlled manner, they have the potential for use as welding sources for classes of materials that have eluded conventional welding approaches. 1, record 66, English, - X%2Dray%20welding

Ben C. Gerwick, Inc. has recently completed physical tests on three 1/2-scale continuous standard-weight reinforced concrete deep beams, for Mobil Oil and Metalock Industrier A/S, of Norway. The study was established to better determine the influence of headed stirrups on the performance of deep beams and to compare the performance of three different transverse shear reinforcing levels(1%, 1. 5%, and 2%), with the performance predicted by the ACI and CSA standards. The use of headed stirrups offers a number of advantages over conventional bent stirrups, including : 1. More rigid restraint of the lateral expansion of concrete under high strains. 1, record 71, English, - lateral%20expansion

The development of a liquid corporate bond market in Europe has also been boosted by a number of secondary factors. For example, although average yields on European government bond have risen over the last few months, they still remain close to historically low levels... This has forced investors to look elsewhere for the returns to which they are accustomed. As a result, the pool of money available for investment in credit or spread product has been growing... In addition, European governments are borrowing less then before as the consequence of their having managed to stick to the strict budget deficit criterion... There are several technical methods which are related to CVM [contingent valuation methods] but which are increasingly viewed as distinct from CVM, called discrete choice methods. They are different from CVM in that "instead of eliciting willingness to pay for the environmental good or service in a specified "state", the [methods] offer respondents a series of choice tasks among hypothesized alternatives which describe a wider range of "states" by altering various levels of several attributes, among which price is merely one attribute". These are new methods and are not as well known or accepted as CVM approaches. Two of the emerging methods are titled-discrete choice modeling and discrete choice experiments(DCE). Discrete choice experiments is a more recent and comprehensive form. It employs multivariat analysis to determine respondent choices and the relationship between different levels of attributes. An experiment is constructed : based on multi-attribute profiles of an environmental good or service(e. g. recreation experience, management or policy options) by systematically altering the attributes in each of the profiles. These profiles are presented to respondents who evaluate two(or more) simultaneously. The evaluation typically involves choosing the most preferred option or allocating a preference rating(perhaps measured by the number of trips) against each option. The results of this experiment are then analyzed statistically to generate measures of preference(or utility) and probabilities of choice for the different scenarios. 1, record 78, English, - discrete%20choice%20experiment

A close link between tRNA gene redundancy and the overall amino acid composition of yeast proteins was also observed. Regression analysis values for individual protein coding sequences proved to be effective descriptors of the translational selective pressure operating on a particular gene. A significantly stronger co-adaptation between codon choice and tRNA gene copy number was observed in highly expressed genes. These observations strongly support the notion that intracellular tRNA levels in normally growing yeast cells are mainly determined by gene copy number, which, along with codon choice, is the key parameter acted upon by translational selection. 1, record 79, English, - gene%20redundancy

Bellanet is an international initiative with a mission to increase the impact of development activities through greater collaboration. Collaboration is enhanced by more effective use of information and communication technologies(ICTs). At the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro the world was faced with the fact that, in spite of massive and accelerating problems of poverty and environmental degradation in developing countries, levels of spending on development assistance were stagnant or declining among many donor nations, and were likely to remain so for a long time. During follow-up meetings, a number of strategies were discussed. One such meeting took place in Bellagio, Italy(from which the name "Bellanet" was coined), where senior representatives of twenty development agencies concluded that one response to the challenges at hand was to increase the impact and relevance of donor actions through greater collaboration. A subgroup(the World Bank, the MacArthur Foundation, SAREC [Swedish Agency for Research Co-operation with Developing Countries], and IDRC [The International Development Research Centre] was asked to investigate options. A proposal for action was formulated and, at a second Bellagio meeting in late 1994, the formation of Bellanet was endorsed. Bellanet was given a mandate to promote collaboration through the use of emerging information and communication technologies(ICTs). In early 1995 Bellanet officially started with the first meeting of the Bellanet International Steering Committee(BISC) and the formation of the Bellanet International Secretariat established at the International Development Research Centre(IDRC), a federal organization established in Ottawa, Ontario. 1, record 89, English, - Bellanet%20Initiative
