A plume is a local fluctuation in the fluid temperature... which detaches itself at more or less regular intervals from the boundaries responsible for the temperature gradient in the fluid. Plumes exist mainly in high Prandtl number fluids, for the following reason. For a fluid to have a high Prandtl number means that its kinematic viscosity is much greater than its thermal diffusivity. The effectiveness of thermal diffusion is therefore low, permitting high gradients of temperature and also of density to exist for a long time before relaxing. This causes large fluctuations in the Archimedean force which drives the plumes. 3, record 2, English, - plume

The stability of convection rolls has been studied in detail, both theoretically and experimentally by Busse and his co-workers(since 1969). In the three-dimensional parameter space,... the stability condition of straight rolls define a surface called the Busse balloon, of which we will consider specific portions only. Basically, two kinds of secondary instabilities can take place : universal or specific. The presence of universal secondary modes depends only on the symmetry properties of the structure whereas specific modes involve physical couplings depending on the value of the Prandtl number. In practice, the situation is a little less clear cut since the threshold of universal modes can depend quantitatively on P and some secondary modes mix universal and specific features. 1, record 3, English, - Busse%20balloon

1, record 3, French, - ballon%20de%20Busse
