[The] study demonstrates that specimen pooling can be easily provided in the laboratory to obtain faster and reliable test results. The primary and fundamental advantage of merging samples is the increase in availability and decrease in high-tech molecular diagnostics costs. The most crucial disadvantage is the loss of analytical sensitivity of the tests and a growing number of pooled samples. 1, record 1, English, - sample%20pooling

After death, passive diffusion occurs as cell membranes break down and this will mean that post-mortem blood samples will, for some drugs, show higher concentations than were seen during life.(This is know as post-mortem redistribution(PMR) and has been described as a ’toxicological nightmare’ because of the number of different processes involved.) 2, record 9, English, - postmortem%20redistribution

In Canada, a Special Threat Assessment Group(STAG) was formed in 1976 as an interdepartmental committee to assess, prevent, contain or otherwise assist in the response to terrorist threats and incidents involving the use of nuclear, biological, or chemical agents. Chaired by an official of Health Canada, it is comprised of medical professionals and scientists charged with assessing a threat's credibility, feasibility, magnitude and potential of likely consequences, as well as helping to identiy the medical and physical resources required to respond. In addition, there is a Nuclear, Biological and Chemical(NBC) Response Team belonging to the Canadian Forces, attached to the NBC School at CFB Borden, Ontario. It is capable of providing on-site advice and technical assistance in isolating, containing, and assessing the hazard; providing any necessary first aid and removal of casualties; collecting and packaging samples for later analysis; and supervising decontamination or clean-up operations. It has conducted a number of exercises and co-operative training with the RCMP and other authorities, and would be activated upon a request from the federal Solicitor General. 1, record 17, English, - Special%20Threat%20Assessment%20Group

NIST [National Institute of Standards and Technology] researchers have implemented a novel approach to cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS) using pulsed lasers. The ring-down method exploits the finite lifetime of light within an optical resonator, which is manifest as an exponential decay of the photon flux exiting the cavity. This lifetime measurement can be used to determine the presence of trace quantities of gaseous molecules, because the photon lifetime decreases as a result of light absorption within the cavity. 2, record 20, English, - lifetime%20measurement

Ecological sampling methods. If we want to know what kind of plants and animals are in a particular habitat, and how many there are of each species, it is usually impossible to go and count each and every one present.... This problem is usually solved by taking a number of samples from around the habitat, making the necessary assumption that these samples are representative of the habitat in general.... Samples are usually taken using a standard sampling unit of some kind. This ensures that all of the samples represent the same area or volume(water) of the habitat each time. The usual sampling unit is a quadrat. Quadrats normally consist of a square frame, the most frequently used size being 1m². The purpose of using a quadrat is to enable comparable samples to be obtained from areas of consistent size and shape. Rectangular quadrats and even circular quadrats have been used in some surveys. 2, record 21, English, - ecological%20sampling

[The] Munsell Colour Chart [or] Munsell chart is used to bring some consistency into the recording of the colours of archaeological items, features and, most commonly, soils and sediments. The chart consists of a book of coloured paint samples each individually numbered. This means that if a person records a sherd of pottery as being the same as colour sample number 10YR5/6 on the chart anyone else with a chart can see exactly what colour that is. The book contains only those colours frequently seen in soils but the Munsell system can record any colour.

The intent for multispectral and hyperspectral image data analysis is to rapidly and inexpensively associate a ground cover label to each pixel in the image. Given the multivariate nature of such data, the process of data analysis is one of dividing up the N-dimensional feature space into M exhaustive but non-overlapping regions where M is the number of classes of materials existing in the scene. The process involves defining the M classes of interest in a quantitative fashion, such that each pixel in the scene, which exists as a discrete location in the N-dimensional space, can be uniquely associated with one of the M classes. Frequently, this is done by using a small number of samples in the scene, called design samples or training samples, to define an N-dimensional probability density function for each of the M classes. 4, record 24, English, - n%2Ddimensional%20probability%20density%20function

... From the character of the bran and the percentages of flour obtained, an opinion can be formed of the approximate milling quality of the small samples. The flours produced are substantially free from bran and germ and therefore can be satisfactorily used for one or more predictive tests for baking quality. The tests usually applied depend on the quantity of flour available. The usual tests are 1) protein content, 2) Zelehy sedimentation test and 3) micromixograph test. By using these methods, it is possible to eliminate a large number of hybrids which mill poorly or yeild flour of unsatisfactory quality, without having to multiply them through later generations to produce larger samples required for full scale quality tests. 1, record 36, English, - micromixograph%20test

Two basic grain grading systems are in use throughout the world : the fair average quality system and the numerical system. The numerical system is the more common system. It separates grain into divisions of quality defined by grading factors. Each division is identified by a grade name or number and grain is bought and sold on the basis of these grades. Buyers obtain the specific quality desired by selecting the grain by grade name and number. In some grading systems, such as Canada's, a certificate of grade is acceptable to an importer, and no additional samples are required as evidence of quality. In other systems, importers demand additional safeguards, such as a sample, together with analytical details of the actual grain being shipped. 1, record 37, English, - numerical%20system

1, record 37, French, - m%C3%A9thode%20num%C3%A9rique

Binet and Simon proceeded to assemble a scale composed of measures of the kinds of higher mental processes that Binet had argued were central to the assessment of intelligence. They constructed some of the specific cognitive tests themselves but they also modified a number of tests that had been developed by two French physicians, Drs Blin and Damaye. Binet and Simon drew samples of "normal" children and children thought to be retarded from schools, hospitals, orphanages, and asylums. The children ranged in age from two to twelve. They used these samples to try out the various tests with the goal of selecting those tests that clearly discriminated between the two groups of children. By this means, they selected thirty tests arranged roughly in ascending order of difficulty. 4, record 39, English, - Binet%2DSimon%20scale

The molecular basis of beta thalassemia in Lebanon has previously been studied in a sample of 25 homozygote individuals. The 25 individuals included in that study had all presented at the American University Hospital and, with the exception of one patient, were all of the Muslim religion. With the advent of PCR, new techniques for mutation screening have emerged, among them the Allele Refractory Mutation System(ARMS) based on allele-specific priming of the amplification reaction. We are currently applying this technique in our laboratory in order to screen a larger number of samples from heterozygote individuals, in an effort to complement the previous findings and study the distribution of mutations among different geographical regions and different religious groups... 3, record 42, English, - amplification%20refractory%20mutation%20system%2DPCR

For pulp fibers, many of the diagnostic features of cell formation seen in wood samples are lost. However, positive identification is possible by following a logical sequence of exclusion, and finally comparing unknown fibers with authenticated fiber samples and/or photomicrographs. The technique is straightforward, especially where only a limited number of choices are possible. Metal dog tags bearing a soldier's name, rank and serial number for identification in case of death date to the early part of the century, when battles were still being fought with bullets and bayonets. But combatants in today's wars are not just killed, they are sometimes obliterated, dog tags and all. So the U. S. Army began collecting blood and tissue samples from new recruits, part of an ambitious "genetic dog tag" program that will eventually allow pathologists to identify the smallest tissue specimens by cross-matching to genetic samples stored on file.
