The BSU [i. e. the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit] has pioneered a system of criminal investigation known as Profiling, [which draws] on a combination of field experience and psychiatric knowledge to develop a loose but directed description of a possible killer. Each serial killer has an idiosyncratic pattern, a systematic way of going about the selection, pursuit, killing and disposal of his victims. Each of his victims will show characteristic damage, or be placed in a ritual manner, or taken from a social group, such as prostitutes or nurses or hitchhikers, having special significance to the killer. [The] Precession/Nutation Card... provides the digital logic for spin sectoring, precession commands, active nutation control and engine mode selection. The spin sectoring portion receives a sun-centered pulse from the PAS and an input from the spacecraft clock. With this information available, the spin period is divided into 128 parts. The current sector status(position) is maintained and updated throughout each spin cycle. This logic information on the spin status is interfaced with both the precession command logic and active nutation control logic. In the precession logic the current sector status is compared with a ground command consisting of three parts : sector ID to start firing a precession thruster, sector ID to stop firing a precession thruster and the number of consecutive spin cycles during which the precession jet will be fired. 2, record 15, English, - precession%20command

The TOPEX/Poseidon(T/P) altimetry data were obtained mountainous topography may lead the altimeter to lock off completely, requiring some time to lock on again, even over water and for narrow rivers, the instrument may deliver no reliable measurement at all. In other cases, the instrument could remain locked on water while the satellite is well ahead of the water body, since the reflected signal on water has more power than the reflected signal on land. This may cause a geometric error that could reach several meters for some regions. In order to minimise potential contamination of the T/P signal by land reflections, and at the same time to retain a sufficiently large number of altimeter measurements on water, we performed a geographical selection of the data. 2, record 22, English, - geometric%20error

Generations derived from two transgenic barley lines were inluded in the trial. These were produced using th BioRad PDS 1000/He particle device to introduce DNA to immature embryos of the spring variety Golden Promise,(Harwood et al. submitted to Euphytica). Line HB1 contains the plasmid pAHC25(Christensen and Quail, 1996) and line HC1 contains plasmids pAL51 and pAL74(Lonsdale et al. 1995). Both pAHC25 and pAL51 contain the bar gene, encoding herbicide resistance, as a selectable marker as well as a reporter gene, gus or luc repectively, and pAL74 contains a fungal glucoamylase gene. Both T1 and T2 generations of line HB1 were represented in the trial, where T0 was the primary transformant. Only the T1 generation of HC1 was included. Lines HB1 and HC1 were selected for the field trial from a number of transgenic lines in the glasshouse. These lines were chosen on the basis of a visual selection for normal appearance and full fertility. Both lines had normal chromosome number and showed the expected sigle gene segregation in the T1 generation. 3, record 28, English, - field%20trial

Air vortex spinning depends on using kinetic energy of a spinning stream of air to the yarn forming inside the specific and immobile vortex... a method of opto-electronic visualisation of motion of yarn in the spinning chamber during the air vortex spinning process will be developed... The optimisation of the spinning process will concern the selection of process parameters and the shape of the spinning chamber and should result in a decrease in the non-uniformity of the number of twists of the yarn obtained and an improvement in its life and service qualities... we plan to work out the method of visualisation of yarn movement in the spinning chamber during the air vortex spinning process... We are going to check the process of vortex spinning for different rows of materials and linear masses of yarn. A close link between tRNA gene redundancy and the overall amino acid composition of yeast proteins was also observed. Regression analysis values for individual protein coding sequences proved to be effective descriptors of the translational selective pressure operating on a particular gene. A significantly stronger co-adaptation between codon choice and tRNA gene copy number was observed in highly expressed genes. These observations strongly support the notion that intracellular tRNA levels in normally growing yeast cells are mainly determined by gene copy number, which, along with codon choice, is the key parameter acted upon by translational selection. 1, record 34, English, - gene%20redundancy

Hyper-Raman effect. The nature of this effect is most easily described in terms of the corpuscular picture of the Raman effect. With an intense laser source, the number of monochromatic photons impinging on the molecules of a medium per unit volume and unit time may be extremely large.... the selection rules for the vibrational and rotational transitions in the hyper-Raman effect are different... Thus certain transitions are observable in the hyper-Raman effect that are normally forbidden. This is one virtue of the hyper-Raman effect; the other is that it is observed in a spectral region whose frequency is far removed from that of the incoming radiation(and is, in fact, twice that of the latter). 1, record 42, English, - hyper%2DRaman%20effect
