Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Elementary particles can be described in terms of a few simple properties. The most obvious of these are the mass and electric charge of the particle.... There is a... property which all particles carry, quantum mechanical spin. The name spin comes from an analogy with classical electro-magnetics. In classical electromagnetic theory, it is well known that a charged particle that is moving through a magnetic field will be deflected. If the particle... is spinning about some axis the deflection will be changed; i. e. the particle will go in a different direction than if it wasn’t spinning. The effect will depend on both the rate of spin and the rotation axis. In quantum mechanics, a similar effect is observed with any quantum particle. When passed through magnetic fields, they behave as if they are spinning electric charges. What's more, they behave as if their rates of spin are integral 0, 1, 2,... or half-integral(1/2, 3/2,...) of a base unit... much like charges come in basic multiples of the electron's charge. The concept of spin here is a bit more abstract than in the classical case. With a classical particle you can paint a little dot on the particle... and directly measure the rotation rate by counting the number of times you see the spot in a minute. This is not possible for quantum particles. They are not little spinning balls in that sense. 1, record 1, English, - quantum%20mechanical%20spin

In order to model the progress of an epidemic in a large population, the population diversity must be reduced to a few key characteristics which are relevant to the infection under consideration. For example, for most common childhood diseases that confer long-lasting immunity, it makes sense to divide the population into those who are susceptible to the disease, those who are infected and those who have recovered and are immune. These subdivisions of the population are called compartments... The SIR model labels these three compartments S=number susceptible, I=number infectious, and R=number recovered(immune). This is a good and simple model for many infectious diseases including measles, mumps and rubella. 4, record 8, English, - susceptible%2Dinfected%2Drecovered%20model

[The Kermack-McKendrick model] was proposed to explain the rapid rise and fall in the number of infected patients observed in epidemics such as the plague (London 1665-1666, Bombay 1906) and cholera (London 1865). It assumes that the population size is fixed (i.e., no births, deaths due to disease, or deaths by natural causes), incubation period of the infectious agent is instantaneous, and duration of infectivity is same as length of the disease. It also assumes a completely homogeneous population with no age, spatial, or social structure. 3, record 8, English, - susceptible%2Dinfected%2Drecovered%20model

The discovery that bacteria are able to communicate with each other changed our general perception of many single, simple organisms inhabiting our world. Instead of language, bacteria use signalling molecules which are released into the environment. As well as releasing the signalling molecules, bacteria are also able to measure the number(concentration) of the molecules within a population. Nowadays we use the term ’Quorum Sensing’(QS) to describe the phenomenon whereby the accumulation of signalling molecules enable a single cell to sense the number of bacteria(cell density). In the natural environment, there are many different bacteria living together which use various classes of signalling molecules. As they employ different languages they cannot necessarily talk to all other bacteria. 2, record 9, English, - quorum%20sensing

4, record 15, French, - peroxyde

Discussions about "biotech labeling", particularly the public debate, often do not involve any definitions or explanations of what actually is covered or required, either in terms of "biotech" or "labeling". Both words can describe a variety of different technologies or label language. In a definitional sense, perhaps in contrast to consumer perception, the word "biotechnology" is a collective term encompassing a number of technologies, some old, others new(Korwek, 1997). The Office of Technology Assessment(OTA, 1984) defined it as processes using living organisms or parts thereof to make or modify products, to improve plants, animals, or to develop microorganisms for specific uses. This definition and others make it clear that the term "biotechnology" can be broad, encompassing a variety of traditional technologies and products thereof, such as bread, cheese, and hybrid corn, as well as newer genetic technologies, such as recombinant DNA(rDNA) techniques. 1, record 18, English, - biotech%20labelling

A paint system usually consists of a number of coats separately applied in a predetermined order at suitable intervals to allow for drying. It is possible with certain types of material, to build up paint systems of adequate thickness and opacity by a more or less continuous process of application, e. g. wet on wet spraying. In this case no part of the system can be defined as a separate coat in the above sense. 5, record 22, English, - paint%20system

1, record 25, French, - habile%20%C3%A0%20duper

A number of parameters are measured by laboratory technicians to ensure that the quality of beer meets the satisfaction of the drinker. Among these parameters is Beer Foam analysis. Foam in a beer is produced once it is poured into a glass in a practical sense. In a laboratory situation, foam is produced in a test tube by the reproducable shaking of a beer sample. Traditionally, laboratory technicians would observe the beer sample and try to determine values for foam potential, the foam half life, and drainage. The sources of international law. There is innate in man a consciousness of right and wrong, regulating his behaviour towards his fellows, the recognition of the requirement to "co-exist" with them on a reasonable footing. Human society, on the other hand, cannot function without a certain number of binding rules of conduct which must be such as to enable it to avoid bellum omnium contra omnes. These factors are the underlying causes of the birth of law in any human community. The accent may be laid on one or other of these fundamental elements, but the two are always present. These are the "sources" of the law in their philosophical, psychological, sociological connotation, the "material" sources.... The concrete ways and means, the "formal" sources of the law, differ from community to community : they are not the same in secular as in ecclesiastical communities, nor in national as in international society. These "formal" sources,... necessarily reflect the nature and structure of the community concerned : they appear as custom, legislation, bye-laws, national case law, papal bulls, treaties, resolutions of international bodies, etc., as the case may be. There is still a third sense in which the expression "sources" is used in respect of law; in this sense the metaphor does not refer to the basic or to the "formal" origins of legal rules, but to the documents and writings in which they can be found, just as in another field historians work with their "sources". These are not, of course, genuine sources of the law. 2, record 31, English, - sources%20of%20international%20law

Biological Filter. High-rate treatment can also be obtained in a biological filter system. Biological filtration is a technique for promoting contact between a free-flowing wastewater and a stationary growth of microorganisms in the presence of atmospheric air. The system does not depend on filtration in the usual sense for its effect.... Biological filter systems(such as the trickling filter) have generally proven to be unsuitable for pulp and paper wastewaters, exhibiting even greater instability to waste variability than activated sludge systems. However, the rotary disc system(a more recent design of biological filter) has been successful on a number of wastewaters and appears to deserve consideration for future applications. In this system a biological growth is cultivated on the disc surfaces. A series of closely-spaced corrugated plastic discs are anchored to a rotating shaft and supported above a trough through which the wastewater is channeled at a controlled rate. The lower 30 to 40% of each disc extends into the wastewater, while the upper portion is exposed to air. Thus, an area of biological growth alternates between submergence to absorb food and exposure to air for oxidation. Any number of rotating assemblies can be used in series to achieve the desired degree of BOD removal. 1, record 35, English, - rotary%20disc%20biological%20filter

1, record 35, French, - filtre%20biologique%20%C3%A0%20disques%20rotatifs

In the real world there are, of course, no ordered fractals. Structures such as coastlines, trees, rivers, clouds, blood vessels, lightning bolts, paths of particles in Brownian motion and thousands of other fractal-like phenomena are imperfect models that are(within certain upper and lower bounds) fractals in a statistical sense [...] Such fractals are called random fractals or statistical fractals. Coastlines, for instance, have fractal dimensions that change from coast to coast. Investigations show that they fall within a range of 1. 15 to 1. 25, the second number measuring the complexity of the west coast of England. 1, record 36, English, - random%20fractal

The representation of a general pulse transmission system is given in Figure 8. 1. Here, the information input to the system is encoded in some sense.... This encoded signal drives the modulator, which maps the pulse sequence into an analog wave suitable for transmission over the channel.... At the receiving end, the demodulator maps the received analog waveform into a pulse sequence that is a "best guess" of the sequence transmitted. The decoder operates on the binary sequence to extract the information originally impressed on the encoder. The overall objective is to transfer the information from the input to the output within some a priori specified low error rate, where the error rate is the average number of disagreements per unit of time between the inputs and the outputs. 1, record 38, English, - pulse%20transmission%20system
