The lengths of chain that are connected together to make up the ship's anchor chain are called shots. A standard shot is 15 fathoms(90 feet) long. Each shot of chain usually bears a serial number, either stamped or cut at the time of manufacture, on the inner side of its end links.

The number of strokes set as an expert score for any one hole.

The value assigned to represent par is always comprised of two putts and the number of strokes it should take to reach the green. For example, a par-3 hole is short enough that one shot is expected to put you on the green, with two putts to follow. The length of a par-4 hole is sufficient to require two shots to reach the green; a par-5 is deemed lengthy enough to require most players to need three shots to reach the green.

Slight nuance between the English terms "rally" and "exchange". In a "rally", the ball must bounce; the term implies an "exchange" of groundstrokes. One can have an "exchange" of any type of shot, for instance, an exchange of volleys, where the ball never touches the ground. Moreover an "exchange" takes place between points; whereas a "rally" can take place between players simply wanting to hit a few balls without keeping score. In Spanish the term "intercambio" is generic. Therefore it means either "rally" or "exchange", depending on the context-"un intercambio de voleas de cerca, un intercambio de golpes de revés". Furthermore, one can use the term "exchange" in English when referring specifically to the length of a rally, i. e. the number of consecutive balls that pass over the net, as in the phrase "At Wimbledon, there were nary an exchange that exceeded 4 shots".
