Kenneth Rinehart, a chemist at the University of Illinois in Urbana, is working with NCI on two compounds that may prove useful for a number of cancers. Didemnin B, a substance extracted from a marine animal called a tunicate and found in the western Caribbean Sea, is currently in Phase II clinical trials for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and a type of central nervous system tumor. However, this extract--which is the marine compound at the most advanced stage of development for use as an anti-cancer agent--has remained in Phase II for five years because of debilitating side effects. 1, record 15, English, - didemnin%20B

The potential therapeutic applications of encapsulated cell technology are enormous... It appears likely that over the end of the decade clinical trials of encapsulated cells to treat many diseases will become a reality. The Food and Drug Administration has already authorized studies to evaluate the safety and biological activity of several types of systems. A number of issues will have to be addressed, including the sourcing of raw materials, the design and building of manufacturing facilities, the scale-up and optimization process, storage and distribution of the product, and quality control. 1, record 16, English, - encapsulated%20cell%20technology

A modification of the creeping random search procedure, where, if the result of a random trial is closer to the maximum/minimum than that of the previous trial, the center of the search distribution is moved to the new point, and random trials are re-initiated. If no point closer than the present center is found in some number of trials, the search is terminated. 1, record 17, English, - random%20search%20with%20recalculation
