Microscope objectives use the principle of aplanatic refraction and to reduce the refraction at the front lens of the objective for higher powers, cedar wood oil(refractive index 1. 517) is placed between the cover glass(index 5. 1, say) and the plane surface of the front lens of higher index... Besides aiding aplanatism the numerical aperture is increased by this process, which therefore increases resolving power. 2, record 1, English, - immersion%20objective

The speed of light in a vacuum is an important physical constant denoted by the letter c for "constant" or the Latin word "celeritas" meaning "swiftness". It is the speed of all electromagnetic radiations, including visible light, in a vacuum. More generally, it is the speed of anything having zero rest mass.... In metric units, the speed of light is exactly 299, 792, 458 metres per second(1, 079, 252, 848. 8 km/h). The fundamental SI unit of length, the metre, has been defined since October 21, 1983, as the distance light travels in a vacuum in 1/299, 792, 458 of a second; any increase in the precision of the measurement of the speed of light would refine the definition of the metre, but not alter the numerical value of c. The approximate value of 3x108 m/s is commonly used in rough estimates. In imperial units, the speed of light is about 670, 616, 629. 2 miles per hour or 983, 571, 056 feet per second, which is about 186, 282, 397 miles per second, or roughly one foot per nanosecond. The speed of light when it passes through a transparent or translucent material medium, like glass or air, is slower than its speed in a vacuum. The ratio of c to the observed phase velocity is called the refractive index of the medium. 5, record 5, English, - speed%20of%20light

Numerical Habitat Models(NHM) have been developed to predict fish habitat quantity, quality and distribution under different flow regimes found in rivers. These models depend on the estimation of an Habitat Quality Index(HQI) at the scale of fish microhabitat. One of the problems of NHM is that mathematical constructs to estimate HQI in one river may not be applicable to other rivers. Hence, HQI are not transferable among rivers. The most common measures of HQI are based on indices of preference of fish for specific ranges of water depth, current speed and substrate composition(referred to as Habitat Suitability Indices; HSI). 5, record 9, English, - habitat%20quality%20index

A numerical quantity used as an index to characterize the type of flow in a hydraulic structure in which elastic forces, in conjunction with the resisting force of inertia, influence the motion of the liquid. It is the ratio of inertia forces to elastic forces. It is equal to a characteristic velocity of the system, which may be the mean, surface, or maximum velocity, divided by the kinematic elasticity of the liquid; all expressed in consistent units in order that the combinations will be dimensionless. The number is useful in the study of water hammer. 2, record 15, English, - Cauchy%27s%20number
