Radioactive decay occurs when an unstable form of a chemical element naturally converts to a stable form of another chemical element. Volcanic ash layers, for example, contain radioactive elements. Contrast enhancement. Improving the picture by turning up the contrast. Most digital image display systems allow one to break each ’primitive’ colour into 256 degrees of intensity. Numerical Habitat Models(NHM) have been developed to predict fish habitat quantity, quality and distribution under different flow regimes found in rivers. These models depend on the estimation of an Habitat Quality Index(HQI) at the scale of fish microhabitat. One of the problems of NHM is that mathematical constructs to estimate HQI in one river may not be applicable to other rivers. Hence, HQI are not transferable among rivers. The most common measures of HQI are based on indices of preference of fish for specific ranges of water depth, current speed and substrate composition(referred to as Habitat Suitability Indices; HSI).

A vast amount of sea ice information is today available at the various ice services in the world. Almost all of this information is stored in the form of ice charts for operational purposes. For statistical or climatological use the chart format is however not convenient and the information needs to be digitized. This is done by assigning numerical values to the ice parameters and to read these values at given grid points on the chart. The charts prepared by the various ice services do not all contain the same number of parameters. The resolution and accuracy also vary according to the use for which the charts are intended. A large degree of flexibility has therefore to be built into the design of both code, format and grid. It should allow digitization of historical ice charts as well as current ones in order to obtain a comprehensive computer-compatible sea ice data bank which is currently updated. The SIGRID format is mainly designed to meet larger scale climate requirements but it may also be used by national services for other purposes.

Said of a coin, token, or medal that is truly an exceptional uncirculated example. Usually, it displays a lustre, surface condition, and strike superior to those normally seen in uncirculated examples. It is commonly graded as MS-67 on the numerical scale.

A system for coin grading using a combination of letters and numbers, instead of an adjectival scale, to express the state of a coin. It was conceived in the late 1940's by Dr. William H. Sheldon who devised a numerical scale, on which 1 represented the worst possible condition of preservation of an unmutilated coin, while 70 was the best possible condition. Used in conjunction with the most common abbreviations that describe coins verbally, it gives a precise idea of the degree of wear of a coin.

OBS

Originally developed for United States coins, especially early ones, the system has since been adopted for all other coins of Canada and the USA by both the CNA and the ANA. Sometimes, it is incorrectly referred to as the Mint State System.
