Response to Morpholine - Route: Eye - Species: Rabbit - Dose: 0.1 ml undiluted - Irritation score = 67.7/110.

OBS

Numerical scoring system developed by Friedenwald, Hughes and Herrmann for the evaluation of primary irritants using the rabbit's eye(for the toxicologic appraisal of a given compound). Table 6 : Scale of weighted scores for grading the severity of ocular lesions : I. Cornea : A. Opacity... B. Area involved.... Total maximum score=80. II. Iris :... Total possible maximum=10. III. Conjunctivae :... Total maximum=20. The maximum total score(110) is the sum of all scores obtained for the cornea, iris and conjunctivae. NB : A test score may result in a fraction [as shown in the above example 67. 7/110] because of the fact that it represents the average of all the animals in the test group.

OBS

The above context was taken from an article by Draize et. al. in the December 1984 issue of the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, which is the basis for the cited irritation score. This article along with supplementary explanations on this concept were given to us by Evan D. Riehl, M.D., Medical Consultant at E.I. Du Pont de Nemours and Company, Newark, Delaware, USA.

Domaine(s)
  • Quilles, billards et autres jeux de boules
DEF

OBS

The common-sense numerical analysis of the way in which a firm will combine inputs to minimize costs can be made more vivid by the use of diagrams. From the production schedule we can draw a picture of the different input combinations that will produce a given output. Figure 27-3 is the exact counterpart of Table 27-2, In it the smooth curve indicates the different combinations of labor and land that yield an output of 346. This could be called a "production-indifference" by analogy with the consumer's indifference curve(...)

Subject field(s)
  • Remote Sensing
DEF

In analysis, the removal of certain spectral or spatial frequencies to highlight features in the remaining image.

CONT

Filtering is an operation designed to improve image readability and/or to extract certain information from them. The principle of the various filters is to modify the numerical value of each pixel as a function of the neighbouring pixel values. For example, if the value of each pixel is replaced by the average of its value and those of its eight neighbours the image is smoothed, that is to say, the finer details disappear and the image appears fuzzier. In "mobile window filtering" the programme computes for a given pixel the sum of the products of the neighbouring pixel values multiplied by coefficients given in a table of coefficients, then repeats the operation for the next pixel and so on.

OBS

filtering: term officially approved by the RADARSAT-2 Terminology Approval Group (RTAG).

French

Domaine(s)
  • Télédétection
DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Metrology and Units of Measure
  • Measuring Instruments
DEF

Relationship between a stimulus and the corresponding response, for defined conditions. Example: the e.m.f. (electromotive force) of a thermocouple as a function of temperature.

OBS

1. The relationship may be expressed in the form of a mathematical equation, a numerical table or a graph. 2. When the stimulus varies as a function of time, one form of the response characteristic is the transfer function(the Laplace transform of the response divided by that of the stimulus).

OBS

response characteristic: term and definition approved by ISO, the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM), the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML), and others.

Domaine(s)
  • Unités de mesure et métrologie
  • Appareils de mesure
DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Automatic Control (Machine Tools)
CONT

The closed loop system is similar to the open loop system with the exception that a feedback unit is introduced in the electrical circuit. This feedback unit, generally called a transducer, compares the amount the machine table has been moved by the servo motor with the signal sent by the control unit. The control unit instructs the servo motor to make whatever adjustments are necessary until both the signal from the control unit and the one from the servo unit are equal.... Closed loop numerical control systems are very accurate because the accuracy of the command signal is recorded and there is an automatic compensation for error.

Subject field(s)
  • Electrical Machining
CONT

Electrical Discharge Wire Cutting uses the same fundamental principles of material removal as EDM [electrical discharge machining], but uses a travelling, small-diameter wire as the electrode. The wire travels from a supply spool, through the workpiece, and on to a take-up spool. The workpiece is held on a table whose movements can be directed to create the desired shape of the part. Numerical control of CNC [computer numerical control] is often used to direct table movement.... EDWC, like EDM, uses the thermal energy of a spark to remove workpiece material.

Domaine(s)
  • Électro-usinage
CONT

  • Bowling, Billiards and Other Ball Games
DEF

A variation(of pocket billiards) similar to fifteen ball with the number of points for each ball equal to the number of the ball and with 61 points needed to win. In rotation, the balls must be played in rotation-in numerical order starting with the lowest numbered ball on the table. Any balls pocketed as a result of or subsequent to contact with the proper object balls are credited to the player, even if the first object ball is not pocketed. Failure to first contact the proper object ball, however, constitutes a miss and ends the player's inning. Any balls pocketed on a miss are returned to the table and spotted.

Domaine(s)
  • Quilles, billards et autres jeux de boules
CONT
