The Northern Secretariat provides a coordinated, cohesive and equitable approach to First Nations and Inuit Health Branch(FNIHB) program delivery issues for First Nations and Inuit living in Yukon, the Northwest Territories(NWT) and Nunavut. The current priorities of the Northern Secretariat are : Implementation of the Territorial Wellness Framework; Accountability and Funding Mechanisms; and Coordinating with partners, project capacity building and program sustainability in territorial communities. The Northern Secretariat is based in Ottawa to support relationships with an office in Whitehorse to support programs in Yukon communities.

Le Secrétariat du Nord fournit aux Premières nations et aux Inuits vivant au Yukon, dans les Territoires du Nord-Ouest (T.N.-O.) et au Nunavut, une approche coordonnée, cohérente et équitable pour la prestation des programmes de la Direction générale de la santé des Premières nations et des Inuits (DGSPNI). Les priorités actuelles du Secrétariat du Nord sont les suivantes : Mise en œuvre du cadre du mieux-être dans les territoires; Mécanismes de responsabilité et de financement; et Coordination avec les partenaires, renforcement des projets et durabilité des programmes dans les collectivités territoriales. La direction du Secrétariat du Nord est située à Ottawa. Son but consiste à offrir un soutien aux programmes des communautés du Yukon grâce à des relations avec un bureau de Whitehorse.

With the establishment of the new Nunavut Territory scheduled for April 1, 1999, Indian and Northern Affairs Canada has incurred new expenditures. The Nunavut Secretariat in Indian and Northern Affairs Canada and the Nunavut Implementation Commission were established in 1994/95.
