A Web-based course is similar to [a] regular master's course in that you will have a textbook, readings, discussions and assignments. The difference is in the delivery. Instead of classroom lectures, you will have interactive lessons delivered via the Web. These lessons require your input and your interaction to complete. Lessons may include summary pages of content, an online worksheet with instantaneous feedback, self-test questions, discussion board posting, simulations, and much more.

A full Web course is a course that can be accessed anywhere and anytime via the Internet and a Web browser. A Web course makes significant use of Web technology to facilitate access to class materials and to support communication between faculty and students, among students, and between students and resources.

Live Online Training is INVIRONMENT Institute's way of reaching our classroom out to your home or office through the Internet. We have established an Internet training center using the website of Microsoft LiveMeeting. This website allows us to present the class in the form of a slideshow with simultaneous live interaction between students and the instructor in a conference call. Each live online class is two hours in length. Students also receive course materials provided in electronic(typically PDF) format.

The single most important reason for a classroom trainer to seriously look at becoming an online trainer is the strong growth in the online training market.... The fact is that online training costs less than classroom training.... The good news for the classroom trainer is that the most effective online training utilizes some form of human interaction, ranging from synchronous Web casts and chat rooms to asynchronous interaction, such as e-mail and forums. Many classroom trainers are finding that these forms of interaction are almost as fun as being face to face with the student. It's culture change for both the trainer and the learner, but the trainer's major roles are still the same.

Some people confuse Web-based training with collaborative online learning. ... an online training programme is only as good as the trainers, copywriters and designers who made it. In this sense it is not that different from classroom training. A good trainer who is behind his material, and who speaks from a wealth of experience, can enliven the dullest training. Similarly, a good trainer(assisted by an experienced design team) will offer the user a genuine learning opportunity whether it is on a computer or not. As such, online training is as much trainer-led as the other variety.

How does an instructor facilitate learning through discussion in an online classroom? Most of us do this every day in our traditional face-to-face classrooms. We lead our students through discussions using strategies that promote reflection and further exploration of issues and topics. We use specific questioning techniques that draw out our students’ opinions, prior knowledge and experience upon which they construct new knowledge. Discussions have long been a valuable method of learning through interaction with other learners and all teachers know how effective this shared learning is for the application of knowledge. The same premise holds true in the online class. Students are encouraged to participate in discussions as they share prior knowledge and experience and use that as a stepping stone in constructing new knowledge.
